Pokemon trainer
A Pokémon trainer is, in the world of Pokémon, a person who captures Pokémon with Poké Balls, raises and cares for them, and also trains them to fight against other trainers who also have Pokémon. The term "Pokémon Trainer" can also be used in a broader context: Anyone who owns at least one Pokémon can be considered a Pokémon Trainer. In this sense, people in Pokémon related occupations, such as Pokémon coordinators or Pokémon breeders, can also be considered to be Pokémon trainers.
Gym Badges
The goal of many trainers is not just to train powerful Pokémon (or help a Pokémon do stronger battles), to compete in league competitions. To do that so, one must collect all eight gym medals.
In video games, a Gym Badge serves both as a symbolic marker of the player's progress in the game, and as an enhancement of the player's Pokémon-controlling abilities. Depending on the medal, it can allow trainers to use Hidden Machines (HM) that allow them to use certain attacks outside of a Pokémon battle, letting them move certain obstacles, light up dark areas, or travel in water. Possession of certain Gym Badges also reduces the likelihood of a Pokémon being stronger than the badge's requirements disobeying its trainers, thus serving as a symbol of respect between Pokémon and their trainers. Some medals also increase certain stats on the trainer's Pokémon, such as its attack power or speed. Eight Gym Badges are required to face the Elite Four in each of the Pokémon regions that contain a Pokémon League (Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, and Galar).
In the anime, even though the only gyms offered are the ones in the video games, there appear to be more than eight gyms in each region, as trainers with the medals have never been seen before they are seen in the video games (some of Gary Oak's Kanto medals are unheard of, for example). It appears that collecting medals from any eight officially recognized gyms in a given region grants a trainer access to their annual Pokémon League event.
Gym medals often resemble the type of Pokémon the gym leader had when defeated, for example the "knuckle medal" they received from Brawly, a Fighting-type gym leader, in Pokémon Ruby, sapphire and emerald.
Pokémon Trade
Trainers can also trade Pokémon with each other so they can get new Pokémon and fill their Pokédex more quickly, plus a traded Pokémon gains more experience points with each battle. Some Pokémon can only evolve if they are traded. In the first versions of Pokémon, it could only be exchanged through a connector cable called the link cable. In the third generation, a way to exchange without the aforementioned cable was incorporated, from the fourth generation it was possible to connect the game to the nintendo wi-fi connection to trade pokemon with anyone in the world who has wi-fi.
Pokemon Video Games
In the video games, Pokémon trainers behave differently than they do in the anime. Pokémon trainers possess various types of Pokémon depending on their race and origin. They are themed differently, and have Pokémon that match their character, name, and persona type. For example, in Pokémon Colosseum there is a trainer named Botan that uses the grass type Pokémon. His name provides a hint as to what might be expected from the player, as Botan is probably derived from 'botanical'.
Pokémon trainers are all different types of people, with given names. For example, a player might find a trainer named Hiker Kent or a female trainer named Beauty Violet. Trainers like these are never assigned a particular strategy, just a group of Pokémon for their type. As the player travels through the game, trainers will approach them and demand a battle, rather than simply asking. They will be found on routes and in caves, and especially gyms, and Pokémon trainers often give the player more experience than wild Pokémon, as well as give money on defeat.
Coaches are known to have a particular quality about them; for example, a "rich boy" will often give the player quite a lot of money for being victorious. Their names can also be a clue as to how hard they are to defeat (compare “young” and “expert”).
Appearance in other games
A Pokémon trainer who appears as the main male character from previous Pokémon video games is a playable character in Nintendo's fighting game Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii. His default outfit is that of the male FireRed/LeafGreen trainer Pokémon and when the player changes his color, his clothing changes to appear similar to other trainers such as Ruby or Sapphire (although the trainer itself never changes). Simply referred to as the "Pokémon Trainer", instead of fighting directly, he uses one of his three Pokémon to fight: Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard. Using his special down move, he can switch between each Pokémon. They share the same damage meter, but must be switched out during the course of battle to prevent health loss, which is a state only he has in Super Smash Bros. Brawl "Trainer Pokémon" is placed in the background, posting the battle commands. Each of the Pokémon have their own individual special moves. His Final Smash is called the Triple Final, and it is a combination attack of Hydro Pump, Solar Beam and Flare, which goes in line to secure hits on the enemy. He teams up with Lucas in adventure mode. Lucas accompanies the trainer shortly after Ness is captured by Wario, and with Squirtle, the two fight against the Subspace army. The two defeat Wario later, and the trainer later picks up an Ivysaur and a Charizard. While exploring an underground cavern, they are attacked by the same enemy that attacked Marth, Ike, and Metaknight. They take the machine down, but are nearly caught in the resulting explosion, saved at the last minute by Meta Knight. After a safe on the ground, they shake hands and team up with Marth, Ike, then Mario subsequently engages Kirby and Yoshi. Something curious is that he does not have a pokedex, but rather cards with the photos of the pokémon that he has to capture.
