Piper Laurie (born Rosetta Jacobs in Detroit, Michigan, January 22, 1932) is an American actress.

Biography and career

His father was a Polish immigrant who was a furniture salesman. His mother was an American of Russian origin. When she was six years old, the family moved to Los Angeles. Laurie was an attractive girl with striking reddish hair, but she was very shy. For this reason, her parents sent her to diction classes. She eventually went to acting classes at a local acting school as well.

When Laurie had turned 17, Universal Studios took notice of her and signed her to a contract. For this reason, she adopted Piper Laurie as her stage name. In 1950 she was selected for her first film, Louisa , in which she co-starred with Ronald Reagan, with whom she established a good friendship. Shortly after, she acted in her second film, this time with Tony Curtis, an actor with whom she would later make several more films. Laurie subsequently made other films for Universal. However, the studio typecast her in the role of an attractive, naive, and weak-headed young woman, and they did not offer her roles in which she could demonstrate her acting skills. Although Laurie was well paid at $2,000 a week, she eventually got fed up and told her agent that she was leaving her job at Universal, regardless of the consequences.

In 1952, she had just turned 20 when the first Miss Universe pageant was held and she crowned the winner, the Finnish Armi Kuusela. She is she was chosen for being the beauty icon of that time.

Finally, Laurie was able to leave without major inconvenience and moved to New York to resume her acting studies. She at the same time she acted in live television shows. In 1957 she received an interesting offer for a movie, which led her to the movies again. Her real break came in 1961, when she played Paul Newman's invalid friend in the classic The Hustler. She was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress. In 1976 Laurie accepted a role in the film Carrie, starring Sissy Spacek. She played the religious and eccentric mother of a shy young woman with mental problems. For her performance, she earned her second Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She got her third nomination in 1986 for her role as the mother of the young deaf-mute girl in Children of a Lesser God . The same year she won an Emmy for her performance in the TV movie Promise, with James Garner.

Laurie was divorced in 1981 and has not remarried. She moved with her daughter to southern California.

In 1990 (in Spain 1991) she played the evil Catherine Martell in Twin Peaks.
