Pietro Antonio Stefano Mascagni (Livorno, December 7, 1863 - Rome, August 2, 1945) was an Italian musician, one of the best exponents of verista opera.

Biography

Pietro Mascagni was born in Livorno, and studied with the composer Alfredo Soffredini. Mascagni's most popular work is the opera Cavalleria Rusticana. Written in just two months and based on a work by the Italian writer Giovanni Verga, it is an exponent of the Italian opera style called verismo, which emphasizes the violent behavior of the characters under great emotional stress. Cavalleria Rusticana has a libretto by G. Menasci and G. Targionni-Tozzetti, and it premiered in Rome in 1890.

Cavalleria Rusticana, one of his most popular works

Pietro Mascagni's success with verismo influenced Italian composer Ruggiero Leoncavallo. Mascagni composed 17 operas, although only Cavalleria Rusticana and L'amico Fritz (1891) remain in the current musical repertoire. Other operas were Il piccolo Marat, Guglielmo Ratcliff, I Rantzau, performed by the famous singer Nellie Melba at Covent Garden, and Nerone (1935) which was a tribute to Benito Mussolini, since Mascagni had agreed to be the official musician of the fascist regime. He died in the Plaza Hotel in Rome when, disillusioned, he found himself destitute.
