The Pichichi Trophy is the prize awarded annually by the Spanish sports newspaper Marca to the top scorers in the First and Second Division of Spain. By extension, the term "pichichi" is also often used generically to refer to the top scorer in a soccer tournament.
The award is named in honor of Rafael Moreno «Pichichi» (1892-1922), an Athletic Club player who stood out for his great goalscoring ability during the years 1910 and 1920, before the creation of the Spanish League of football.
It is not an official award and is based on the chronicles prepared by the correspondents of the newspaper Marca, and not on the arbitration proceedings. Likewise, their statistics compute for the Golden Boot trophy, an award granted by the European Sports Magazines.
History
The National Sports Delegation, al Moscardó, authorized the Royal Spanish Football Federation to establish the award, whose creation was the initiative of the newspapers Marca and the now-defunct Arriba. The Pichichi Trophy was awarded for the first time in the 1952-53 season, and Telmo Zarra (Athletic Club) was its first winner. Subsequently, Marca has symbolically recognized all footballers as winners of the Pichichi Trophy who were the league's top scorers prior to the 1952–53 season.
In the 2002-03 season, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the trophy and the 75th edition of the Spanish League, Marca presented a special commemorative award, Pichichi de Oro , to Telmo Zarra and Enrique Castro «Quini», for being the two Spanish footballers, alive, with the most goals in the First Division. In the 2005-06 season, Marca, in the image and likeness of the Pichichi Trophy, created the Zarra Trophy to reward the top Spanish scorer of the season.
Lionel Messi —the soccer player who has won the award the most times— holds the record for the highest scorer in a season with 50 goals, achieved in the 2011-12 season. Messi is also the player with the most Pichichis achieved consecutively with five (from 2016 to 2021), followed by Hugo Sánchez with four (from 1984 to 1988). Likewise, Quini and Hugo Sánchez are the only two players who have won five Pichichi Trophies playing with different teams.
List of First Division winners
The trophy has been awarded annually since the 1952-53 season. The winners of previous years have been recognized, symbolically, later.
