Phyllostachys
Phyllostachys is a genus of bamboo in the Poaceae family that has approximately 50 species and 200 varieties. It is native to eastern Asia.
Description
The rhizome is of the monopodial type, it is the bamboo that spreads the most. They are characterized by having no less than two branches in each internode and more distant internodes. They are found on all continents; in Europe they reach heights of more than 20 m, usually resist cold temperatures of up to -22 °C and are highly valued for their wood.
Taxonomy
The genus was described by Sieb. & zucc. and published in Abhandlungen der Mathematisch-Physikalischen Classe der Königlich Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften 3(3): 745, pl. 5, f. 3. 1843. The type species is: Phyllostachys bambusoides
- Cytology
The basic chromosome number is x = 12, with somatic chromosome numbers of 2n = 24 (rarely), or 48, or 72. There are diploid and polyploid species. Chromosomes are relatively small.
- Etymology
Phyllostachys: Generic name derived from ancient Greek meaning "at the tip of the leaves", referring to the inflorescences.
