The Filipino Academy of the Spanish Language (abbreviated AFLE) is a linguistic academy in charge of regulating the Spanish language in the Philippines. It is one of the three Spanish language academies in countries where Spanish does not have official status at the federal level, the others being the North American Academy of the Spanish Language, in the United States, and the National Judeo-Spanish Academy, in Israel. It is made up of a group of academics, professors, philologists, journalists and writers recognized in the Spanish language.

Its original location was at the Spanish Manila Casino in Ermita, Manila, the city's historic district, before moving to its current headquarters in Makati. He is a founding member of the Association of Academies of the Spanish Language (ASALE).

History

It was established in Manila on July 25, 1924, being the eleventh Spanish academy in the world. Its founding marked the evident superior position of the Spanish language in the Philippines over other languages, such as English, despite the growing cultural influence of the United States at the time.

Its founders and main promoters were the novelist and short story writer Guillermo Gómez Windham, the polygraph Jesús Balmori and the poet and essayist Fernando María Guerrero, called the "prince of Filipino poets", founder of the Philippine newspaper in Spanish The Renaissance. His daughter, Evangelina Guerrero, also a poet, would later be the first woman to be offered the award in the field of all the Hispanic language academies, which she resigned because she understood that it was rather a tribute to the late father and founder. The second female Filipino academic was the writer Adelina Gurrea.

Dario Villanueva, director of the Royal Spanish Academy, visited the Philippine academy in July 2017, as part of his official visit to the Philippines. During said visit, where he also chaired a meeting of the Academy's board of directors, he remarked that the Academy has served as a & # 34; beacon of Spanish & # 34; in the country.
