Peter II of Sicily

Peter II of Sicily (1305-August 15, 1342) was king of Sicily until 1342.

He was the son of Frederick II of Sicily and Eleanor of Anjou. In 1321 his father gave him the throne of Sicily with the intention of invalidating the Treaty of Caltabellotta, which provided for the return of the Sicilian kingdom to the House of Anjou.

He married Isabel of Carinthia, from whom three children were born: Luis, Frederick and Eleanor, who was the wife of Pedro IV the Ceremonious.

His reign was marked by strong disagreements between the king and the nobles, such as the powerful families of the Ventimiglia, the Palisi, Chiaramonte and Antioch. In some of these cases, they could not withstand the pressure, so the king was forced to grant them greater powers and some of the claimed properties. Furthermore, he was in frequent conflict with Robert I of Naples, who carried out raids on the island, and with the papacy, which censured him and instigated revolts by his subjects.

Peter II died unexpectedly in August 1342 in Calascibetta. His heir was his first-born son, Louis of Sicily, who ascended the throne when he was only five years old. The tomb of Pedro II is located in the Palermo Cathedral.
