Adopted in 1975, it comes from the Greek πέντε, which means five, since it is equivalent to 10005. (It is based on the model of tera, which comes from the Greek 'monster': tetra- comes from the Greek word for four and thus peta, which comes from penta-, it loses the third letter, n.)
In computing, the prefix pebi is also often used, which represents 1,125,899,906,842,620 (250), instead of 1,000,000,000,000,000, especially when used as a byte prefix (pebibyte).
