Pesaro
Pesaro is an Italian municipality and the capital city of the province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the Marche region. According to the 2007 census, its population was 92,206. Facing the Adriatic Sea, Pesaro is an important tourist center, thanks to its beaches, its monuments, and the fact that it is the homeland of the famous composer Gioachino Rossini and the Roman general Gaius Suetonius Paulinus, victor of the British rebellion in times of Queen Boudica (AD 60).
It is located 37 kilometers from Urbino. Pesaro is also called the city of the four "M": sea, mountains, music and majolica. The first "M" refers to the Adriatic Sea, with its sandy beaches highly appreciated by tourists and residents. The second "M" remember that Pesaro is embraced from north to south by two hills facing the sea, which guarantee pleasant weather all year round; north "S. Bartolo" (which is also a natural park), and to the south the hill "Ardizio" that separates Pesaro from Fano (Fanum Fortunae). The third M refers to the importance of music for the life of the city, as the birthplace of the composer Gioachino Rossini, of which you can visit the house-museum, the popular conservatory and the theater that bear his name: Every year the Rossini Opera Festival (Rossini Opera Festival) is held here, attended by all the lovers of lyrical music in the world. The fourth "M", recalls the ancient tradition of majolica, famous in Italy.
In the course of 2005 the city was awarded the Blue Flag and the President of the Italian Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi awarded Pesaro the silver medal for civil valor.
The city is home to Victoria Libertas Pesaro, also known as Scavolini di Pesaro, which is one of the most prestigious basketball clubs in Italy. It also has a women's volleyball team with the same name, which is also one of the most prestigious in recent years in Italy, winning three consecutive Italian leagues (2008, 2009 and 2010) as well as some trophies in Europe.
History
Pesaro (or better Pisaurum, in Latin) was founded by the Romans in the year 184 B.C. C. as a colony in the land of the Picenos or Piceni, the people who lived in the territory in the Iron Age.
On July 1, 2020, the territory of the municipality increased by incorporating the previously neighboring municipality of Monteciccardo as a district.
