Historical area of Peñarol

Peñarol is a neighborhood in the city of Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay. It is located in the northwest area of the city and approximately in the center of the department of the same name. Its name comes from the Italian city of Pinerolo in the Piedmont region.

It had a great boom at the time when the railway workshops operated there. They were later abandoned. In any case, it is still one of the train stations that remain in the city of Montevideo. In 2009 the new Peñarol station was inaugurated, with the intention of giving the neighborhood more life and popularity.

History

Operating houses of the workshops, built by the English company Ferro Carril Central del Uruguay (FCCU), founded in 1876, Peñarol neighborhood, Montevideo, Uruguay

When Montevideo was a walled colonial city and the Peñarol area had no name and was all fields with farms, Juna Bautista Crosa, a native of the town of Pinerolo (Piedmont, Italy), installed a grocery store in 1776 where today is the intersection de Coronel Raíz and route 102 (perimeter), in the currently tubed headwaters of the Miguelete stream.

Crosa gave himself the name of his town of origin as a nickname, which in Piedmontese is pronounced Pinareul and popular speech deformed it into Peñarol.

The grocery stores were meeting and reference places for neighbors and travelers (on foot, on horseback, in wagons and stagecoaches), which led to the informal designation of the business and the area as Peñarol.

Crosa died in 1790 and was buried in the holy field of the chapel next to the grocery store, which was also called Peñarol.

The railway of the late 19th century

A century after Crosa's death, in 1890, the first mature industrial revolution arrived in Peñarol, with the installation of the English railway workshops of the company Ferro Carril Central del Uruguay (FCCU), founded in 1876.

The train station and the first workshop began operating in 1891, giving rise to an industrial enclave, later a villa and finally another neighborhood of Montevideo.

By the end of 1907, the company Ferro Carril Central had already built the 33 thousand square meters that are still standing and that since 1975 have been legally a National Monument. This is made up of: workshops (mechanics, blacksmithing, foundry, sawmill, carpentry, painting, warehouses, remittances, technical offices and printing), 44 homes for workers, 8 homes for senior and intermediate staff, a general store, a place for social meeting and recreation called Centro Artesano and a theater (from 30, also a cinema).

"The Trompo", symbol of the neighborhood.

Historical center in recovery

The historic center and the industrial railway landscape of the Peñarol neighborhood can be explored on foot following the following streets: Shakespeare (train station), Sayago, Morse, Carlyle, Rivarola, Saravia to the starting point, Shakespeare. The first unit of what is being set up as an on-site museum is already operating at the train station: the waiting room and the historical offices of the station house the equipment from 1920, telegraphs, telephones, block staff, date stamp, tickets, furniture and old images are on display and there is a guided tour.

This is part of a plan to recover the heritage of the Peñarol neighborhood carried out by the Municipality of Montevideo in agreement with the State Railway Administration. The theater and cinema room is currently being refurbished and its opening is scheduled for the end of 2011.

The Municipality of Montevideo and the Ministry of Education and Culture presented to UNESCO the document "Peñarol Neighborhood: historic center and railway industrial landscape", so that the original enclave is considered a World Heritage Site.

Other features

In addition to the historic center, Peñarol has a rural area of farms -where Crosa's grocery store was located- and a series of industries, such as Motociclo, Bimbo, Levaduras Terry, Schneck, Andamios Tubulares and Becam.

Peñarol also has schools (34, 166 and 258) and public (N°40) and private (Secundario del Norte) high schools, a shopping center on Saravia street between Coronel Raíz and Shakespeare streets, a neighborhood fair on Thursdays and Sundays, a municipal polyclinic, an INDA soup kitchen, as well as housing cooperatives, Mesa II being the largest.
