Toponymy

The first way in which the town is documented dates from December 18, 1217, in a letter from King Alfonso IX of León made in Salamanca, in which he mentions the current Peñarandilla with the name of Penaranda de Sordos. Three decades later, in 1244, the town appears simply as Penaranda, a name from which it later evolved into Peñaranda. Finally, given the greater magnitude of the nearby Peñaranda de Bracamonte, the diminutive -illa would have been added to the locality, giving rise to the current place name of Peñarandilla.

According to the National Statistics Institute, as of January 1, 2021, Peñarandilla had a total population of 175 inhabitants, of whom 95 were men and 80 were women.
