Paramaribo District
The district of Paramaribo is one of the administrative divisions in which the Republic of Suriname is organized and includes the nation's capital of the same name, as well as the surrounding territories.
It has a population of 242,946 inhabitants in an area of only 182 km², which makes it the most densely populated area in the entire country.
The history of the region begins in the 17th century with the arrival of the first British settlers and the construction of the Fort Willoughby. This construction was later taken by Dutch troops and renamed Fort Zeelandia. The area was constantly a matter of dispute between both countries until the Treaty of Breda at the end of the Second Anglo-Dutch War granted absolute sovereignty to the Orange monarchy.
