Pappophorum is a genus of herbaceous plants, belonging to the Poaceae family. It is native to the United States and South America where it is distributed from the United States to Argentina and The Antilles.

Description

They are tussock perennials. rounded pods; ligule a row of cilia; blades linear, convoluted to flattened. Inflorescence a narrow panicle. Spikelets solitary, with 3-6 florets, the lower 1-4 florets bisexual, the upper florets reduced or sterile, the lowermost floret the largest, the other florets progressively smaller upwards; disarticulation above glumes but not between florets, or only very late; glumes subequal, membranaceous, 1-veined, glabrous, persistent, carinate, acute, as long as the bodies of the lemmas; lemma rounded on back, chartaceous, 7(-9)-veined, with 11-25 patent, unequal, scabrous edges; palea as long as body of lemma or slightly longer, 2-veined; callus slightly oblique to truncate; lodicules 2; stamens 3; stigmas 2, feathery. Fruit a caryopsis; embryo 1/2-2/3 the length of the caryopsis; dotted thread.

Taxonomy

The genus was described by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber and published in Genera Plantarum 2: 787. 1791 The type species is: Dicrocaulon pearsonii N.E. br.
