Papaverales is a dicotyledonous taxon placed in the order category, which in older classification systems such as Cronquist's (Cronquist 1981, 1988) contained the families Papaveraceae, Fumariaceae, and Pteridophyllaceae.

In current classification systems such as the APG (1998), its successor APG II (2003) and the most up-to-date APW), These 3 families become subfamilies of the family Papaveraceae, being the subfamilies Papaveroideae, Fumarioideae and Pteridophylloideae. Papaveraceae belongs to the order Ranunculales and the order Papaverales is no longer used.

See Taxonomy of Papaveraceae for more information.
