The flag of Palau was adopted in October 1980, when the islands became a self-government, and then a self-governing Republic (January 1, 1981). The yellow circle represents the moon, a symbol of unity, while the blue background represents independence. It should be noted that its resemblance to the Japanese flag is no coincidence. The flag of Palau is also a sign of admiration for Japan, since this country boosted both economically and technologically Palau. The great friendship between these two countries is reflected in the flag, and in the Friendship Bridge that connects the largest island and Koror, the capital. The yellow circle, which represents the Moon, is not placed in the same place as the Japanese flag, for the same reason that it is a sign of respect and appreciation for Japan.

The flag of the United Nations Pacific Islands Protectorate (PIPNU) consists of a blue field containing six five-pointed white stars. The stars symbolized the six districts of the former protectorate: the Marianas, the Marshall Islands, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Palau. The blue field symbolizes freedom and loyalty. The flag was the result of a contest won by Gonzalo Santos, a government official who lived in the Yap district. Through his efforts, he earned $250. Santos' proposal was approved by the Council of Micronesia on October 3, 1962 and used for the first time on October 24. The flag was reapproved by the PIPNU High Commissioner and by the Congress of Micronesia in July 1965. It was made official on August 19, 1965. Before this date, they were The flags of the United States and the United Nations were used. The flag was used practically throughout the decade of the seventies and beginning of the eighties of the last century. By that date, each district had adopted its own flag.
