Pafman
Pafman is a Spanish comic character created by Joaquín Cera in 1987 when he was part of Ediciones B, protagonist of the eponymous series. The main characters of the comics are Pafman (a bungling superhero) and an anthropomorphic cat and inventor who cause a multitude of disasters in their fight against supervillains.
Editorial career
Pafman's adventures appeared in 1987 in Mortadelo magazine. Initially, they were two pages, later they increased to four. Later, compilations were made in albums of the Olé Collection. Finally, Cera drew the 20-page comic titled Doctor Ganyuflo in 1990 and another in 1993 called The Character Assassin that can still be found in stores. In 1996, Ediciones B suppressed its comic magazines to focus its production of new comics on albums by Mortadelo y Filemón and Superlópez, so the series also disappeared from the market.
In 2004 Pafman returned to stores with a new comic strip in the form of an album published by Ediciones B in the collection TOP Cómic titled Pafman redevuelta. In this new stage Cera, its author, due to publisher demands, only published one comic per year, (although in 2012 there was no album) but they were much more elaborate than the ones he did in the 1980s. The 2011 album, En la Tierra Mediocre changes format from the Top Cómic collection to Crónicas de Pafman, with more pages, but smaller and in black and white. The latest album, "The Adventure of Titanidon" appeared in 2013.
Features
Pafman is a clumsy and bungling superhero who is determined to fight evil, even though people would probably be better off without his help. The name of the series is an obvious pun on Batman but the two characters have very little in common with each other. The humor of comics is based on the continuous joke for which surreal situations, slapstick, word games, breaking the fourth wall and parodies are used. There are also influences from manga. A good example of the levels of absurdity that the series could reach is in the comic The case of the churrifocal glasses which begins with a confidant of Pafman being murdered by & #34;four hundred hooded men with glasses and Mexican hats" (which appear out of nowhere) and ends with the hero defeating the villain, an anthropomorphic armchair, by throwing termites at him, since he had known the nature of his enemy when reading the script of the comic.
Pafman and Pafcat live in the city of Logroño City, a megacity that only resembles the real Logroño in name and that has a jungle, a beach, a statue with a torch and anything else that the plot of the comic in question requires.
Pafman is accompanied by his faithful assistant Pafcat, a cat resulting from the mutation of a friend of Pafman and his domestic cat (they were put in a washing machine along with 1 kg of plutonium) and with the ability to design the most bizarre inventions.. In the new installments (starting in 2004), he is also accompanied by his niece Tina Tonás, a very attractive young police officer who seems to have inherited all the family's intelligence, and Professor Fuyú, an old scientist who 'chechea'; when he speaks and he has, since his debut comic strip, The Night of the Living Dying, a zombie hand clinging to his neck.
His most common enemy is the 'Black Masked', a bandit dressed all in black and with an N on his chest. His face has never been seen, he always wears a hood under the other. The Black Masked Man is capable of committing all kinds of evil acts, from stealing a brick from a construction site to summoning a demon to destroy the planet.
Common secondary characters in Pafman: Captain Europa, Professor Sagitarius, Manazas, Dr. Pacostein, the evil "multi-offices" Malfendi... and the most important, Mafrune, a multi-employed character who at first acted as a clerk, a traffic guard or whatever the plot required, but starting with the 1992 comic Pafman police his role is established as that of chief commissioner of the protagonists.
Argument
The first comics had almost no continuity, so one Pafcat comic could have a family of anthropomorphic cats like him and in another he could be surprised when realizing that he himself is an animal. Over time, however, even though the series continues to have gag for gag's sake as its banner, there were some things that were established. At first Pafman and Pafcat worked independently, but later they became part of Commissioner Mafrune's police staff. After the reactivation of the series in 2004 there are more elements of continuity, for example in the first album, Pafman redevolves, we are told that the characters have passed the seven years in which no adventures were published frozen at the pole and we meet Pafman's niece, but readers do not find out why they were frozen there, or what happened to Tina Tonas's father until the album Pafdark, the dark halter.
