The province of Pachitea is one of the eleven that make up the department of Huánuco. It borders on the north with the province of Huánuco; to the east, with the province of Puerto Inca; to the south, with the department of Pasco, and to the west, with the province of Ambo.

From the hierarchical point of view of the Catholic Church, it is part of the diocese of Huánuco, a suffragan of the archdiocese of Huancayo.

Toponymy

When the province was created in 1918 it took its name from the Pachitea River, a tributary of the Ucayali River.

However, in 1984, the eastern section of its jurisdiction (where the Pachitea River flowed) was dismembered to create the province of Puerto Inca without the province being renamed to reflect its new geographic reality (a case similar to that of the department from Amazon). Thus, the province was left with an obsolete and geographically incongruous place name that has not been corrected to date.
