Paʻanga
The pa'anga or Tongan dollar is the currency of the Kingdom of Tonga. It is managed by the National Reserve Bank (Pangike Pule Fakafonua 'o Tonga) in Nukualofa.
History
It came into effect on April 3, 1967, replacing the Tongan pound at an exchange rate of 1 pound = 2 paʻanga.
One pa'anga is subdivided into one hundred seniti. Its ISO code is TOP
and the most used abbreviation is T$ (¢ for seniti). The pa'anga is usually used as a dollar in English and the seniti as a cent.
Tickets
When the Pa'anga came into force, the first family of banknotes put into legal tender showed the bust of Queen Salote Tupou III and consisted of the following denominations: ½, 1, 2, 5 and 10 pa 39;anga. In 1974, banknotes began to carry the bust of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. Starting in 1983, the issuance of ½ pa'anga notes began to be discontinued, while in 1985 the 20 pa'anga note began to be issued. By 1988, 50 pa'anga notes had already been put into circulation. In 1992 the National Reserve Bank of Tonga assumed responsibility for issuing paper money. On July 30, 2008, a new family of banknotes was put into legal circulation with greater security measures, a different design and with the bust of Jorge Tupou V. This new family of paper money brought with it the introduction of banknotes with a new denomination., those of 100 pa'anga.
The obverse of all banknotes are written in the Tongan language and show the portrait of the monarch. The reverse has texts in English and shows typical motifs and monuments of the kingdom.
