P.O.D. (acronym for Payable On Death), is an American rapcore and nu metal group (although they identify themselves as a band of punk, rock and reggae) of Mexican descent founded in 1992. The initials P.O.D. mean Payable Upon Death (based on the group's Christian beliefs). It is composed of Sonny Sandoval, Wuv Bernardo, Tras Daniels and Marcos Curiel.

History

Directly from San Diego, California, P.O.D. He brought a fresh mix of hard metal, rap, metal, Latin rhythm and reggae, and his religious beliefs to the metal scene. after forming in 1991.

Guitarist Marcos Curiel and drummer Noah "Wuv" Bernardo formed the band, recruiting Wuv's rapper cousin, Sonny Sandoval. The following year the addition of Traa Daniels from Cleveland, Ohio made the band complete.

After getting everything ready, they started playing anywhere that hired them from cafes to concert halls. Initially P.O.D. was strictly an underground sensation, selling three home EPs on his own label, distributed by Tooth and Nail and Rescue Records -- Snuff the Punk and Brown, now owned by flyingleaprecords. net.

By 1998, with the band selling over 40,000 copies of their self-made releases, major labels began to take notice and Atlantic finally signed the band.

After one final independent release, The Warriors EP in 1998, P.O.D. he made the leap to the major leagues with The Fundamental Elements of Southtown, a title tribute to his San Diego teammates. The album, produced by Howard Benson, created quite a stir with what P.O.D. garnered several awards at the 1999 San Diego Music Awards.

The rest of the world was feeling it too. The album went platinum with sales of 1 million copies and the band earned a slot on the highly influential OzzFest tour. He also gained theatrical exposure, with "School Of Hard Knocks" included in the soundtrack of the movie Little Nicky by Adam Sandler.

In 2000 the band participated in the Ozzy Osbourne festival "Ozzfest"

All of that, however, was only a beginning of things to come. Their second major-label album, Satellite, released on the fateful September 11, 2001, sent the band into stellar orbit thanks to the metal anthem 'Alive'. The song managed to become a Top 10 hit on mainstream and modern metal radio stations.

A follow up track, "Boom" didn't do as well, but "Youth of the Nation" it marked the second hit on the world's biggest charts, and the song's lyrics were even inducted into the Metal Hall of Fame, as well as receiving a Grammy nomination in the Best Hard Rock Performance category.

The author of the Encyclopedia of Contemporary Christian Music has described the band as "One of the biggest all-time hits in recent Christian music."

Strangely, there was little celebration at the P.O.D. After some vacation time in February 2003 the band announced that Marcos had amicably parted ways with the band to pursue his own musical vision.

With Satellite reaching sales of over 6 million copies and going triple platinum in the United States, the band recruited new guitarist Jason Truby as a replacement and recorded a track for the soundtrack. from The Matrix Reloaded, "Sleeping Awake."

In 2006, WWE wrestler Rey Mysterio uses the song by P.O.D. booyaka 619

The band resurfaced with a new album, Payable on Death at the end of 2003 and had early hits like being certified Gold by the RIAA just 4 weeks after it was released and reaching #1 on MTV's TRL with the video for "Will You" in its opening week. Then with the next track "Change The World" a video came out recorded in different places showing union between different cultures of the world, except that the label never sent it to MTV and did not do much for this album for renewal within the company with all this Payable On Death only managed to sell 1,000,000 copies.

Style and influences

The name of the band, Payable On Death (POD), derives from the banking term "Payable On Death". The band chose this name to be a direct link to Christian theology which explains that since Jesus died on the cross, Christians' debts to God have been paid. POD's style has evolved over the years, from the rap metal sound on their early records, to the Nu/Alt.Metal with elements of reggae for which they are best known today. The band's seventh album,"When Angels & Serpents Dance", is a combination of alternative rock, reggae, Latin rock with metal influences, with almost no nu-metal/rapcore sound from their previous albums. POD's influences include Santana, Bad Brains, Bob Marley, Metallica, U2, Pantera, Rage Against the Machine, Beastie Boys, Black Flag, Faith No More, The Police, Jane Addiction, Living Colour, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Suicidal trends.
