Otilino Tenorio
Otilino Tenorio (* Guayaquil, Guayas Province, Ecuador, February 1, 1980 - † Los Ríos Province, Ecuador, May 7, 2005) was an Ecuadorian soccer player who played as a striker. and his first team was Emelec.
Trajectory
His real name was Othelino, but since everyone called him Otilino, that's how he was known during his short career. Nicknamed "Oti", "Otigol" and & # 34; Spiderman del Fútbol & # 34;, this last name earned because when he scored a goal, he put on a Spiderman mask, this celebration became very popular internationally.
He began his professional sports career at Club Sport Emelec in Guayaquil, where he stood out for his great goalscoring skills. At Emelec he managed to be the top scorer in the history of the Merconorte Cup with 11 goals, and the top scorer in the 2001 Merconorte Cup with 7 goals, in addition to having been runner-up in that international tournament that year with Emelec.
After several years in the Ecuadorian team, he was transferred to foreign soccer, where he had a short experience. His return to Ecuadorian soccer is due to the interest of the El Nacional club, which hired him in 2004, where he was not followed up due to a serious injury. In 2005 he recovered from his injury and began to have great sports performance.
Paradoxically, his last goal was against his beloved team, Emelec, on April 17, 2005 at the Atahualpa Olympic Stadium in a 5-2 victory for El Nacional. That day he scored 3 goals and he did not celebrate them with the classic mask but with a plush heart that said: & # 34; With Love !! & # 34;. In addition, his last game in the Ecuadorian championship was also against Emelec, in the defeat of his team 0-2, on April 24 of the same year at the Capwell stadium, in that match Otilino missed a penalty and was sent off. The local fans began to shout: "Otilino, Otilino", without knowing that this cry was actually a farewell.
Death
Two weeks later, on May 7, 2005, he died when his vehicle crashed into a fuel tank truck and a gas truck on the highway between the towns of Santo Domingo de los Colorados and Quevedo, in the Los Ángeles hamlet near the Patricia Pilar parish in the province of Los Ríos.
"Today, more than any other day, I think of the man, not the soccer player. I think of Otilino's smile, of his joy, I think of how he always wanted to be on good terms with the whole group, to cheer them up. I think of Otilino's people skills", said the technical director of the Ecuadorian Soccer Team at the time, Luis Fernando Suárez, who assured that Tenorio had "a wonderful personality. "I am very sad, because we lose a great man, valuable as a human being.
As a tribute to his memory, at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, Iván Kaviedes donned a yellow "Spiderman" mask, after scoring the third goal of the "Tricolor" in the 3-0 win over Costa Rica.
National team
He was capped by the Ecuadorian soccer team 13 times. His debut was on October 16, 2002 in a friendly match against Costa Rica.
