Oswaldo Vigas (Valencia, Carabobo, August 4, 1923 - Caracas, April 22, 2014) was a Venezuelan painter and muralist. He studied medicine at the University of Los Andes in Mérida and completed his career at the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas. His work encompassed painting, sculpture, engraving, ceramics and tapestry.

Biography

Childhood

Son of Dr. José de Jesús Vigas and Nieves Linares, descendant of Arturo Michelena. He was 10 years old when his father died and Vigas lived between Valencia and Tinaquillo.

1940

In 1941, he moved to Guacara, where he made his first paintings. His first known important work is the illustration of the Book of Poetry (1941) at the Ateneo de Valencia. In 1943, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his work Hojas Rojas, creating the exhibition that made him known. In 1945, he entered the University of Los Andes-Mérida to study Medicine. In 1946, he presented ¨Oswaldo Vigas¨ at the Ateneo de Valencia. His painting continues to be motivated by the human figure, with increasing deformation, greater freedom and thickening of the line in reinforcement of the general expressiveness of the work. In 1947, he participated in the V Salón Arturo Michelena, at the Ateneo de Valencia. In 1949, he moved to Caracas and completed his medical studies at the Central University of Venezuela; he never practiced as a doctor. He frequented the Taller Libre de Arte and actively participated in the artistic movement of the time, and periodically visited the Cristóbal Rojas School of Plastic Arts, where he interacted with Manuel Cabré, Martín Durban, Pedro Ángel González, Rafael Ramón González and Rafael Monasterios, among others. others. Furthermore, in the same year, he obtained the First Prize in the First Painting Salon at the Mérida Athenaeum. The human figure continues to be the central theme of his painting, increasingly distant from conventional figurativism. The line becomes more aggressive, he begins to use flat colors, lacerating them, and discovers pre-Columbian ceramics. All of this marks the preamble to "The period of the witches".

1950

In 1952, he obtained the Arturo Michelena Prize at the Ateneo de Valencia and the National Prize for Plastic Arts, obtained several works and settled in Paris. In Paris she took the Art History course at the Sorbonne. In 1957, she returned to Venezuela and returned to Paris. In 1959, he as cultural attaché of the Venezuelan Embassy in France. In 1962, he participated in the Venice Biennale representing the country. During that period, he ventured into material informalism and made a series of etchings with the sugar water technique.

1960

In 1964, he returned to Venezuela and the UC published a monograph on the artist, written by the Norwegian critic Karl K. Ringström. In that year, he again received the Arturo Michelena Prize with a work with an informalist tendency, Parameras . Her informalist experience enriched her reunion with figuration and in the mid-sixties she returned to the essential forms of her witches in a series of "personagrestes", executed with violent brushstrokes and material charge, briefly interrupted at the end of the decade. for a return to abstraction. In 1965, he was appointed director of culture at the University of Los Andes and together with Juan Astorga he worked on the creation of Mamja.

1970

From 1970 onwards, he settled in Caracas and resumed his work on the series María Lionza and Señoras. In 1971, he was appointed director of the Art Division of Inciba. At the beginning of 1972, he traveled to the United States and dedicated himself to developing a set of serigraphs. Upon his return, in this same year, he resigned from his position in protest against the censorship that the State imposed on the I Salon of Graphics and Drawing at the Center of Fine Arts of Maracaibo, whose performance had to be suspended. From 1974 to 1975, he was part of the Preparatory and Organizing Commission of Conac. In 1976, he was appointed member of the Advisory Board of the Museum of Fine Arts of Caracas and the National Art Gallery, which began operating in May of this year under the direction of Manuel Espinoza. In 1978, he was part of the organizing committee of the I Ibero-American Meeting of Art Critics and Plastic Artists. In 1979, the National Art Gallery held an anthological exhibition of his work produced between 1943 and 1977.

1980

In 1981, he joined the Proposition 20 group, and exhibits at the Museum of Fine Arts in Caracas the tapestries designed by him and executed in the workshops of St. Cyr (France). Already in 1971, he had carried out work of this type in workshops in Portugal and France, which he later continued with tapestries woven by artisans from Toluca (Mexico) and later with a set made in Spain. At the same time, he executed numerous ceramic pieces: reliefs on refractory and stoneware plates, molds for dishes, paraffin oxides under cover, etc. "In Oswaldo's ceramics many of the fantastic beings that occupy the entire space of his paintings, tapestries and graphics reappear, but now reduced to the size of a talisman" (Pineda, 1981). He supervises the execution of a stoneware mural relief commissioned by the Ateneo de Caracas and in 1983 he made gouache and graphics, inspired by Simón Bolívar. In 1985, he presented his first bronze sculptures, a consequence of the ceramic experiences of the early eighties. In 1986, he worked around the theme of crucifixion (from sketches dating back to the fifties), peace, mother, child and birds. The space in Vigas' work begins to be populated with signs and non-figurative forms, based on irregular planes that are oriented towards increasingly linear geometric compositions but with a gestural character. "Rectangles and squares are intercepted by pronounced bars that recall Hartung, even due to the monochromatic aspect of these compositions, since Vigas reaches the fullness of this period with fabrics resolved on the basis of black and white, of suggestion graph. It is evident that there is still a suggestive atmosphere here, a degraded atmosphere that distances these works from the purely planistic conception, typical of geometric abstractionism. Carlos Raúl Villanueva commissioned several mosaic murals for the University City of Caracas.

1990

In 1990, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Caracas organized a retrospective with more than 200 works including paintings, sculptures, tapestries, ceramics, jewelry and crafts. On the occasion of this exhibition, the Lagoven company produces for its Cuadernos series the short film dedicated to the life and work of the artist, Oswaldo Vigas: renewal in the origin. This same year, he is invited to Montreal (Canada) and participates in the exhibition & # 34; Latinartca 63: masters of contemporary Latin American art & # 34; . In 1990, a new book was published on the work of Oswaldo Vigas, with texts by the French critic Gastón Diehl. In 1992, he traveled to Monaco and participated in the XXVI International Prize for Contemporary Art, where he received first prize with Crucifixion VII. In 1993, at the Palacio de la Moneda in Paris, he organized the exhibition 'Vigas desde 1952 a 1993', which brings together around 137 creations including paintings, gouache, sculptures, ceramics and drawings. In 1995, he exhibited in & # 34; Tapestries of today on walls of yesteryear & # 34; (France and Tokyo), a tapestry made on the occasion of the Pan American Games in Caracas (1982). In 1996, the exhibition "Oswaldo Vigas: an American man" It is presented at the Casa de las Américas in Havana on the occasion of the third anniversary of the Casa Simón Bolívar. In 1999, he was honored at the seventh edition of the FIA. In his last stage his paintings tend toward simplicity, with a few touches of color and large areas of untouched canvas. Of his work, the National Art Gallery (Caracas) has in its collection a significant number of works dated between 1957 and 1987.

Death

He died at the age of 88 due to pneumonia, after being admitted to a hospital in Caracas without serious symptoms.
