Orson Scott Card (August 24, 1951) is an American writer. He writes science fiction and other literary genres. His best known work is Ender's Game.

Born in Richland, Washington, Card grew up in California, Arizona and Utah. He lived in Brazil for two years as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church). He was graduated from Brigham Young University in 1975 and the University of Utah in 1981. He currently lives in Greensboro, North Carolina.

A prolific writer, Card is the author of numerous novels (Lost Boys, The Treasure Chest) and various sagas such as The Return Saga or the stories of Alvin the Maker.

He has won numerous Hugo and Nebula Awards, including the 1985 Nebula and 1986 Hugo for Best Novel for Ender's Game and the 1986 Nebula and 1987 Hugo for The voice of the dead.

Card has ventured into the world of comics by writing the script between 2005 and 2006 for the miniseries Ultimate Iron Man.

He also collaborated on the script of some graphic adventures (video games) from the 90s such as the first Monkey Island.

Early Years

Card is one of six children born to Willard and Peggy Card, and the older brother of Arlen Card. He was born in Richland, Washington, and grew up in Santa Clara, California as well as Mesa, Arizona, and Orem, Utah. He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Brazil and is a graduate of Brigham Young University and the University of Utah; he also spent a year doing a doctoral program at the University of Notre-Dame.[citation needed] He currently lives in Greensboro, North Carolina, an environment that has played a role important in Ender's Game and in many of his other works.

Personal life

Card and his wife Kristine Allen have had five children, each named after one or more authors he and his wife admire. Their children's names are Michael Geoffrey (Geoffrey Chaucer), Emily Janice (Emily Brontë and Emily Dickinson), Charles Benjamin (Charles Dickens), Zina Margaret (Margaret Mitchell) and Erin Louisa (Louisa May Alcott). Charles, who had cerebral palsy, died shortly after his 17th birthday, and his daughter Erin died the same day she was born. Orson Scott Card and his wife live with his youngest daughter, Zina, in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The life of his son Charles has influenced the novels of Orson Scott Card, especially the Homecoming series. His daughter Emily, along with two other writers, adopted her father's short stories Clap Hands and Sing, Lifeloop and A Sepulchre of Song for the theater in Posing as People.

In 2008 Orson Scott Card appeared in the short film The Delivery, which starred his daughter Emily. He plays a writer reading an audiobook in the short film that won first place for Fantasy at the Dragon*Con Film Festival. He wrote an original story, The Emperor of the Air, specifically for the short film, directed by Gabrielle de Cuir and Stefan Rudnicki.

Orson Scott Card is a fan of the television series Firefly and appears in a documentary about the series. He has also served as a juror on various television shows and organizations And the National Organization for Marriage (2009–2013).

Personal opinions

Religion

Card's practice of the Mormon religion is an important part of his life. One of his great-great-grandparents was Brigham Young, a major leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and all of his ancestors in the last three generations have been Mormons. Her ancestors include other prominent Mormons such as Charles Ora Card, founder of the Mormon colony of Cardston, in the Canadian province of Alberta. His faith has been a source of inspiration that has influenced his personal works and opinions.

Politics

In 2006, one day before the United States presidential election, Card wrote an opinion piece in RealClearPolitics, in which despite being a Democrat, he encouraged voters to support the Republican party. In another article written for the Mormon Times, he condemned the decision of any government that would approve gay marriage, stating that "regardless of the law, marriage only has one definition, and any government that tries to changing it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and end it..." In 2009 Card became a member of the National Organization for Marriage, a group that tries to prevent the legalization of same-sex marriages. Card has called for laws against homosexual conduct to remain on the books and for a return to the values of America in the 1960s.

Environment and Science

While supporting research into alternative energy sources and moving away from the use of fossil fuels, Card has frequently criticized actions to prevent global warming, saying that the alleged dangers of global warming "have become a scientific orthodoxy that hinders research and debate". The short story of her & # 34; Angles & # 34; shows scientists who are afraid to continue their research because it would go against established scientific dogma. He too, perhaps because of his religious beliefs, has shown his distrust of Darwinism in opposition to the theory of Intelligent Design (which he also distrusts, but for different reasons). Card is critical of scientists who claim that Darwinism completely explains how evolution works, and has also said that "science has never and never can demonstrate Intelligent Design."
