In the American college course coding system, the number 101 is typically used for the beginning-level introductory course in a subject. This system was designed to make exchanges between faculties easier. In theory, any course with the same number at one institution should meet the same standards as a similar course at another institution.

Based on this usage, the term "101" has been extended to refer to the introductory level of learning or a collection of basic materials on some subject.
