O'Hare International Airport
The Chicago-O'Hare International Airport (IATA: ORD, ICAO: KORD, FAA LID: ORD), (from English: O'Hare International Airport), also known simply as O'Hare Airport or O' 39;Hare, is a major airport located in the northwest corner of Chicago, Illinois, United States, 27 kilometers (17 miles) northwest of Downtown Chicago. It is the largest hub for United Airlines, whose headquarters are in downtown Chicago, and the second largest hub for American Airlines, after Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. It is operated by the City of Chicago Department of Aviation, associated with the regional authority.
In 2008, the airport had 881,566 aircraft operations, an average of 2,409 per day (64% commercial, 33% air taxi, 3% general aviation and <1% military). O&# International Airport 39;Hare is the second largest airport in the United States, behind Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport with 69,353,654 passengers passing through the airport in 2008, a change from 2007 of −8.96%. The O'Hare it also has a strong international presence, with flights to more than 60 destinations abroad. O'Hare ranked fourth in the United States in 2005 for international airports behind only New York John F. Kennedy International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport and Miami International Airport, which serve more destinations abroad.
O'Hare International Airport was voted "Best Airport in North America" for 10 years, by readers of the North American edition of Business Traveler magazine (1998-2003) and Global Traveler magazine (2004-2007).
Although O'Hare is Chicago's main airport, Midway International Airport, the city's second airport, is located six miles from Downtown Chicago, the main business and financial district.
Terminals
O'Hare has four numbered passenger terminals with nine letters rooms and a total of 182 doors. Two or more additional terminal buildings are planned; there is the possibility of a large terminal complex for the west side of the field, with access from I-90 and/or the Elgin-O'Hare motorway, if the reconfiguration of the track is completed and the number of passengers requires additional terminals.
With the exception of flights from pre-cleared destinations in the United States, all inbound international flights arrive at Terminal 5, as the other terminals do not have screening facilities. Several airlines, such as American, Iberia, Lufthansa, and United, have their international flights depart from Terminals 1 and 3. This arrangement requires passengers to disembark at Terminal 5 and then crews tow the empty plane to another terminal for boarding.. This is done, in part, to facilitate connections for passengers passing from domestic to international flights, since while Terminals 1, 2 and 3 allow airside connections, Terminal 5 is separated from the others. terminals by a set of taxiways that cross the airport access road, which requires passengers to exit security, board the airport transit system, and then back through security in either direction.
Terminal 1
Terminal 1 is used for United Airlines flights, including all major flights and some United Express operations, as well as flights for Star Alliance Lufthansa and All Nippon Airways partners. Terminal 1 has 50 doors in two rooms:
- Conference Room B: 22 doors.
- Conference Room C: 28 doors.
Rooms B and C are linear rooms situated in separate buildings parallel to each other. Concourse B is adjacent to the airport road and houses check-in areas, baggage claim and security checks at its land gates and aircraft on its airside. Concourse C is a satellite terminal with gates on all sides, in the center of the ramp Concourse B is connected via an underground pedestrian tunnel under the ramp. The tunnel originates between gates B8 and B9 of Concourse B, and ends in Concourse C between gates C17 and C19. The tunnel is illuminated by a neon installation entitled Sky's the Limit (1987) by Canadian artist Michael Hayden, who performs a graceful and very slow version of "Rhapsody in Blue".
United also operates a bus service after security between Concourse C (at gate C9) in Terminal 1 and Concourses E and F (at gate E4) in Terminal 2. It operates with three United Club in Terminal 1: one in Concourse B near gate B6, one located near gate B16 and one in Concourse C near gate C16. There is also a United First International Lounge and a United Arrivals Suite in Concourse C near gate C18.
Concourse B features an extension at its north end (doors B18-B22) commonly called the "banana doors" due to the narrow curved shape of the extension. The final gate, B22, branches into three separate access walkways for three regional jet parking positions.
Terminal 1 houses the Chicago office of All Nippon Airways.
Terminal 2
Terminal 2 is home to Air Canada, Delta Air Lines and Delta Connection domestic flights, and most United Express operations (check-in for all United flights is done at Terminal 1). Terminal 2 has 43 gates in two halls.
- Room E - 17 doors.
- Room F - 26 doors.
There is a United Club in Concourse F near gate F8, and a Delta Sky Club in Concourse E near gate E6. United Continental Holdings, United's parent company, is currently upgrading its facilities in Terminal 2, including building 10 new aircraft access bridges for regional flights, reconfiguring lounges and the construction of a United Club that will replace the current one. US Airways operated from Terminal 2 until it moved its operations to Terminal 3 in July 2014, to be co-located with its merger partner American Airlines. Check-in for US Airways remained in Terminal 2 until September 16, 2014, when the check-in counters moved to Terminal 3.
Terminal 3
Terminal 3 is home to all American Airlines flights, as well as departures for select Oneworld operators including Iberia and Japan Airlines, as well as unaffiliated low-cost carriers. Terminal 3 has 75 gates (5 to be added) in four concourses:
- Room G - 25 doors.
- Room H - 17 doors.
- Room K - 16 doors.
- Room L - 17 doors (5 to be added)
Concourses G and L house most of American Eagle's operations, while Concourses H and K house American's main operations. American's Oneworld partners Japan Airlines and Iberia depart from gate K19 and Alaska Airlines operates from gate H4. Concourse L is also used for flights operated by Frontier Airlines, Spirit Airlines, JetBlue, Virgin America and Air Choice One. The City of Chicago and American Airlines have agreed to an extension to Concourse L to add five new gates. The doors are expected to be used primarily for American Eagle's fleet of Embraer E-175s. American has agreed to pay around $55 to $75 million and the gates are expected to be completed by 2018. The airline operates three Admirals Clubs in Terminal 3: one located in the junction area of gates H6 and K6, one after the security area in front of gate L1 and one in Room G in front of gate G8. American also has a flagship lounge (called the International First Class Lounge) located near gate K19. The flagship lounge is scheduled to move under the Admirals Club located in the crossing area between gates H6 and K6 in late 2017.
Terminal 5 (International Terminal)
Terminal 5 houses all O'Hare international arrivals (excluding American Airlines and United Airlines flights from pre-cleared destinations). Other pre-clearance destinations, including flights operated by Aer Lingus and Etihad Airways, arrive at Terminal 5, but are treated as domestic arrivals. With the exception of select Star Alliance and Oneworld airlines departing from Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 respectively, all non-US airlines except Air Canada depart from Terminal 5. Terminal 5 has 21 gates (9 to be added) in a room:
- 'Room M' - 21 doors (9 to be added)
Terminal 5 has several airline lounges, including the Air France-KLM lounge, British Airways first class galleries and terraces, Korean Air Lounge, Scandinavian Airlines Lounge, Swissport Lounge and Swiss International Air Lines First Class Lounge and Business Class Lounge. The US Customs and Border Protection facility is located on the Arrivals (Lower) level.
Terminal 5 underwent a $26 million renovation designed by A. Epstein and Sons International, Inc., beginning in July 2012, which includes the addition of post-security dining and retail, including many restaurants and Chicago brands, updated design and an engineering redesign. The project was completed on April 4, 2014. Terminal 5 is operated by Westfield Management.
O'Hare recently developed a gate capable of accommodating the world's largest passenger aircraft, the Airbus A380. On February 10, 2016, the Chicago Department of Aviation approved construction to build a gate that could handle Airbus aircraft. The new gate, M11a is the only gate capable of handling the Airbus A380 and, like other gates of Terminal 5, is designated as "common use", which means that no specific airline has exclusive control over it. Emirates and British Airways have expressed interest in using their A380s on routes involving O'Hare. The gate became operational on July 19, 2016, with Emirates being the first airline to use it.
Old terminals and halls
Old Terminal 1
Terminal 1 was the first international terminal. It opened in 1955, became the international terminal in 1963, and was demolished in 1984 to make way for the current Terminal 1. It was replaced by a temporary Terminal 4 built in 1984. The terminal was connected to Terminal 2 by a walkway. closed with glass. It had a "Y"-shaped concourse, similar to the H/K Concourses in Terminal 3.
Concourse A (Terminal 1)
The old Terminal 1 also had a satellite lounge A that served various airlines. Among the airlines that used to operate from this terminal were Air France, El Al, Icelandair, Mexicana de Aviación, Pan Am and Sabena.
Concourse D (Terminal 2)
A Concourse D in Terminal 2 previously existed and served as the concourse for AirCal, Braniff International, Continental Airlines, Eastern Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Northwest Airlines, People Express, Piedmont and United Express until it was demolished in 1988 to give room for the current rooms of Terminal 1. It had 12 doors.
Terminal 4
Due to the construction of United Terminal 1, all international arrivals and some international departures were moved to a temporary Terminal 4 from 1984 to 1993. Terminal 4 was located on the ground floor of the main garage; departing and arriving passengers were bused to and from their aircraft. The terminal served many international carriers during this time, but was inadequate both in terms of area of operation and bus loading/unloading capacity.
When the new $618 million international terminal was made, it closed on July 11, 1990, with airline executives and government officials, led by Mayor Richard M. Daley and Secretary of Transportation Samuel K. Skinner.. The new Terminal 5, designed by Perkins and Will in conjunction with Heard & Associates and Consoer Townsend & Associates was partially opened on May 27, 1993, with its lower two levels completed to handle all international arrivals. The remainder of the terminal, including the departures level, opened on September 30, 1993. The name "Terminal 5" was used for this new terminal in order to avoid confusion with the old Terminal 4.
Since the opening of Terminal 5, Terminal 4 has become the airport facility for regional transit buses, hotel shuttles, and other ground transportation; the Terminal 4 designation may be used again in the future as new terminals are developed. The Chicago Subway Blue Line was extended to the airport in 1984.

Load
There are two main cargo areas at O'Hare that have storage and aircraft parking facilities. The Southwest Cargo Area, adjacent to Irving Park Road, accommodates more than 80% of the airport's cargo flights, spread across 9 buildings in two zones. The northern cargo area, which is a modest conversion of the old military base (the 1943 Douglas plant area), also receives air freighters. It is adjacent to the northern portion of Bessie Coleman Street.
Two satellite cargo areas have storage and disassembly facilities, but planes do not park in them. Cargo is trucked to/from other aircraft on other ramps. The southern loading zone is located along the Mannheim road. The eastern cargo area, adjacent to Terminal 5, was formerly the only cargo section of the airport but has now evolved primarily into an airport support area.
The southwest cargo area is partially in the path of one of the new runways (10C/28C). The redevelopment of the aerodrome will involve moving/replacing this primary cargo axis.
