Nuevos Ministerios Station
Nuevos Ministerios is a large rail transport interchange for the Madrid Metro and Cercanías located under the Nuevos Ministerios near the AZCA financial complex, at the crossroads of Paseo de la Castellana, Joaquín Costa street and Raimundo Fernández Villaverde street, on the border between the districts of Tetuán, Chamberí and Chamartín in Madrid (Spain).
Its fare corresponds to zone A according to the Madrid Regional Transport Consortium, although it belongs to zone 0 according to the zoning of Cercanías Madrid.
Railway situation
The station, which is located at an altitude of 656 meters, is part of the routes of the following railway lines:
- Iberian width line Madrid-Valencia, kilometric point 5,0.
- Iberian wide line Atocha-Chamartín, kilometric point 4,4.
History
The railway station, currently belonging to the Renfe Operadora Madrid Cercanías network, was inaugurated in 1967 as part of the so-called Laughter Tunnel. It would take 12 years for the Madrid Metro to arrive here, when the line 6 station with the same name was built. Subsequently, new Metro stations for lines 8 and 10 were added. Line 6 station was renovated in the platform area, replacing marble walls with white stained glass.
Therefore, today the Nuevos Ministerios station provides transfers between three Metro lines and another seven of Cercanías Madrid, to which must be added some Media Distancia lines of Renfe Operadora. Direct access to the Madrid-Barajas airport is provided via Metro line 8 and also has a billing terminal, which operated until the opening of the new Terminal 4 (T4), at which time this service was no longer provided. despite the fact that the trains arrive at the new terminal since May 3, 2007. Since 2011 the service provided by line 8 is complemented by the Cercanías C-1 line between Príncipe Pío and T4.
Commuter station
Since its inauguration on July 18, 1967, the Nuevos Ministerios station has gone from being a simple halt to a large station with a large influx of passengers, due to its strategic location in the city of Madrid. Currently, it has six platforms where Madrid Cercanías trains have a stop corresponding to lines C-1, C-2, C-3, C-3a, C-4, C-7, C-8 and C-10.
The platforms are divided into two parts. On the one hand, there are four platforms with four tracks (two central platforms and two lateral ones) where the trains that circulate through the old tunnel of laughter pass, corresponding to lines C-1, C-2, C-7, C-8 and C-10. On the other, in parallel and a few meters to the west, there are two platforms with two tracks where the trains that circulate through the so-called new tunnel of laughter pass since July 9, 2008, corresponding to lines C- 3, C-3a and C-4.
Metro Station
The history of the arrival of the Madrid Metro at this station begins in 1979 with the opening of the first section of line 6 between Cuatro Caminos and Pacífico, with the accesses to the Shopping Center, Calle Orense and Calle Agustín de Betancourt. The connection between the Cercanías station and the Metro line 6 station is made through long corridors.
Later, on June 10, 1982, the then line 8 between Fuencarral and Nuevos Ministerios was opened, connected to line 6 by a long corridor and with two entrances on Paseo de la Castellana.
In 1986, the then line 8 was extended to Avenida de América, a section that was closed ten years later to carry out the junction of line 10 and the old line 8, inaugurating said junction on January 22, 1998, the year in which the Nuevos Ministerios-Fuencarral line became part of line 10, being called line 10 (Aluche-Fuencarral). The architecture of the station was not substantially modified, only some metal projections were added to the platforms of line 10 to temporarily adapt it to the circulation of narrow gauge trains. More or less at the same time, a new access for the commuter station was created next to the Shopping Center and the AZCA
Already at the beginning of the XXI century, in 2001, the station suffered prolonged closures for its comprehensive reform in the area of Line 10, where the metal projections were removed when the circulation of wide-gauge trains (Ansaldo-Breda 7000 series) was recovered, at the commuter station, where the southern access was modified to make room for the extension of the new line 8 and a lobby with billing terminals. In 2002 the extension of line 8 was inaugurated and with it the new underground interchange decorated with white glass. The extension of the entrance hall to lines 8, 10 and Cercanías Madrid is such that it has been used on numerous occasions for exhibitions and shows.
From July 30 to September 9, 2022, the Sainz de Baranda - Nuevos Ministerios section of metro line 6 was cut off due to works, so this station acted as the gateway. In its place, there was a special bus service free of charge for the traveler and with a stop near the affected stations. Service on lines 8 and 10 was not affected.
