History
The road was created in 1990 during the administration of Mayor Juan Martín Caycedo, with engineer Camilo Nassar Moor being Director of the IDU who conceived and conceptualized it. It runs 30.3 kilometers within the city of Bogotá. The avenue originally emerged as the union of three avenues: Novena Avenue in the North, Ciudad de Quito Avenue in its central part and South Avenue. Together with the North Highway, it is considered part of the Pan-American Highway route in Bogotá.
It was born as a prototype of an expressway in the administration of Mayor Juan Martín Caicedo Ferrer in 1990, which consisted of a 24 km long road from 147th Street to the limits of Bosa and Soacha, without traffic lights and with a variety of vehicular and pedestrian bridges, which today between the sections of Calle 41 to Soacha, and Calle 106 to Calle 147, this type of infrastructure is still missing.
It currently has voluminous vehicular traffic, where the three most critical points are: the level intersection from Carrera 33 to the north; the traffic light crossings between 3rd Street and Primero de Mayo Avenue; as well as on the so-called Southern Highway from the South Terminal, one of the traffic light intersections that causes daily traffic congestion in both directions.
Layout
The NQS is divided into three sections, with three different names: Laureano Gómez Avenue, extends from north to south from Calle 193 along the Northern Railway line to Paseo de los Libertadores Avenue through Usaquén and Chapinero; Ciudad de Quito Avenue, also known as Carrera 30, extends in a north-south direction between the North Highway and the Tunjuelo River, crossing Barrios Unidos, Teusaquillo, Los Mártires, Puente Aranda, Antonio Nariño, Tunjuelito and Kennedy; and, Avenida del Sur, between the river and the border with Soacha, serving the towns of Ciudad Bolívar and Bosa. At its border with Soacha it becomes National Route 40, which serves as communication with the cities of southwestern Colombia (Ibagué, Armenia, Cali, Pereira and Pasto). Its main crossings are:
