Northern Bar el Ghazal State
Bar el Ghazal del Norte (in English: Northern Bahr el Ghazal, in Arabic: شمال بحر الغزال, Shamal Bahr al-Gazal) is one of the ten states that make up South Sudan. Located in the ancient region of Bar el Gazal, it occupies an area of 33,558 km² and has an estimated population of 1,200,000 inhabitants (2007). Uwayl is the state capital, Wedweil is the other important town. It borders Sudan to the north, and the South Sudanese states of Western Bar el Gazal to the south and west, Warab and Abyei to the east.
The road network is in precarious condition, the main one being the A43, which is entirely dirt road, serves as a communication between Uwaly and Juba, the capital of South Sudan.
Geography
The state is located on a plain that rises between 400 and 580 m s. n. m., the soil is typical of Sabana Seca. To the east is the Sudd swamp region, a floodplain in the rainy season. The main rivers are the al-Arab, Jur and Lol.
