    • In Guatemala, conservative Alvaro Arzú Irigoyen of the PAN is elected as new president.
    • They take to the Keiko orca, the main attraction of the fun park Kingdom Adventure of Mexico City, to the Coast Aquarium Oregon. Keiko was the main attraction of the park for several years; her transfer was due to the search for better living conditions for the orca, and was the first step prior to her release on the North Sea.
  • 8 January:
    • UNICEF requires the People ' s Republic of China to provide urgent explanations for the deaths of thousands of children in orphanages in the country.

  • February 6: In the Atlantic Ocean, opposite the coast of the Dominican Republic, a Boeing 757 belonging to the Turkish airline Birgenair is crashed. 189 people die.

  • April 6: In the city of Mar del Plata (Argentina) the independent theater El Galpón de las Artes is inaugurated.
  • April 7: In Mexico, for the first time, the summer schedule is applied to take advantage of one more hour of sun, with the objective of saving energy.
  • April 15: Secuestro de Terrazas del Ávila, a hostage-taking in Caracas, Venezuela, which lasted for more than twenty hours. The kidnapping resulted in two deaths and three injuries, after one of the kidnappers surrendered, one of the hostages could flee and the remaining kidnapper shot the police, followed by a failed rescue operation.

    • In Palestine, the Palestinian National Council adopted by majority the amendment of the articles of the Constitution that incited the destruction of Israel.

  • October 16: In Guatemala's Mateo Flores Stadium, there is a human avalanche that causes 83 deaths and more than 200 wounded.
  • 31 October:
    • Philips makes public that he left the DCC format (compact digital cassette: digital compact cassette), although it would maintain the supply of tapes and the technical service for users until 2006. This format had been launched into the market only four years earlier, in 1992.
    • In Venezuela, in front of the parliament, anti-government protests were revived, called by the opposition for the increase in the university budget and supported by Hugo Chávez, where there were 25 detainees and a dead national guard.

  • November 1st: In Latin America the American cable TV channel for children is inaugurated, Discovery Kids
  • November 5: In the United States, Bill Clinton is re-elected president.
  • 5 November: in Puerto Rico, Pedro Rosselló is re-elected governor. Receives 1006,331 votes in front of Hector L. Acevedo, who gets 875,852
  • 12 November: near New Delhi, a Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 747 and an Ilyushin Il-76 cargo with Kazakh flag collid in full flight, causing the death of 349 passengers.
  • 12 November: In Nazca (Peru) there is an earthquake of 7.7 that leaves 14 dead.
  • November 19: Pope John Paul II receives Cuban President Fidel Castro in the Vatican City.
  • November 20: The U.S. cable TV channel for children, Fox Kids, is inaugurated in Latin America.
  • 21 November: In Puerto Rico a gas explosion at Humberto Vidal Store in San Juan causes several wounded and killed.

  • 9 December: In Bangkok, the Asian Olympic Council announces the official hymn of the sporting organization. The work is a group of sounds of the cultures of the Asian continent to represent their cooperation and unity.
  • 9 December: in Costa Rica it is decreed by the law of Executive Decree No. 25724 on the day of the traditional Costa Rican Masquerade every 31 October of every year.
  • 10 December: In Uruguay, a plebiscite is held to submit for the consideration of the citizenry a constitutional reform that establishes the internal elections of a single candidate per party and the second round of elections; the ballot is practically packed, and the count of votes observed is extended until January, in which the so-called Constitution of 97 finally enters into force.
  • 14 December: in the city of Quito (Ecuador) is celebrated the XXV International Edition of the OTI Festival. The Spanish representative, Anabel Russ, achieves victory with the theme Hands.
  • December 17: In Peru, an MRTA command took the Japanese embassy in Lima, where a party was held, holding more than 600 people. That same night they'll release all women. The remaining 72 hostages will be released on 22 April 1997, when the Armed Forces entered the embassy and executed all the guerrillas.
  • December 20: In Latin America, broadcasts of the U.S. cable television channel for children Nickelodeon begin. In addition, in the United States, Apple purchased NeXT Computer.
  • December 22: In Mexico, Santos Laguna becomes the first short tournament champion of the first Mexican football division, this being its first title in its history.
  • 29 December: in Guatemala, URNG and the Government signed a peace treaty, after 36 years of internal struggles.
