The Nicene-Constantinopolitan symbol is a symbol of faith, a dogmatic declaration of the contents of the Christian faith, promulgated at the Council of Nicea I (325) and expanded at the Council of Constantinople (381). The object of the Nicene creed was to agree on a definition of the dogmas of the Christian faith, prevented until then by the scarce institutionalization and the strong regional variants. The main adversary of the Nicene doctrine was Arianism, a theological current led by the North African priest Arrio, who did not want to accept that Jesus Christ was God himself (concept of Trinity) as proposed to be interpreted by the theologian Athanasius at the Council of Nicea I; other theological problems, especially trinitarian ones, would not be resolved until the First Council of Constantinople, when the divine character of the Holy Spirit was definitively affirmed.

The Creed

The creed summarizes the basic tenets of the Christian faith in a relatively simple manner, intended to provide a resource for memorizing and proclaiming them to the faithful. It implicitly condemns the most widespread errors, as a means to identify possible dissidences; later modifications of the creed would seek to give greater precision to the definition of contemporary heresies.

The expanded version of the Nicene symbol issued at the Council of Constantinople I (381), which is called the Nicene-Constantinopolitan symbol, arose from the Church's need to clearly establish what any person should believe. baptized on the Holy Spirit, and against the heretical ideas of that time.

Its profession is part of the Catholic and Orthodox celebration of the mass, and is part of the preaching of most Protestant churches; the Lausanne Agreement of 1974 included it as the basis of evangelical practice.

Denominations that reject the creed in whole or in part—among them Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Arians, and Unitarians—are frequently labeled non-Christian by others, which has led to bitter disputes and even legal action in the United States. Joined.
