New Town Cemetery
The Poblenou Cemetery (in Catalan cementiri de Poblenou) is located in the neighborhood of the same name in the city of Barcelona. It is also known as Barcelona General Cemetery, Eastern Cemetery, Levante Cemetery or Old Cemetery.
History
It was thought of as a solution to the unsanitary problems caused to the literally crowded inhabitants of the walled city by the parish graves that existed inside it. It was inaugurated by the Bishop of Barcelona Josep Climent in 1775 on uninhabited land near the Mar Bella beach, being the first cemetery in the city built outside the walled perimeter. It is located in the current street of Taulat no.
The cemetery was destroyed by Napoleonic troops. In 1813, a young Italian architect named Antonio Ginesi was commissioned to build the new burial site, blessed by Bishop Sichar on April 15, 1819. The neoclassical forms of the Ginesi cemetery - the space for equal burials, the effect of order and serenity - reflect the aesthetic tastes and political aspirations of the city's new groups of wealthy merchants and manufacturers - in particular, the makers of Indianas. In 1821 it was used in its entirety unexpectedly, due to the terrible cholera-morbid epidemic that broke out in Barcelona, which caused thousands of deaths.
Since its inauguration, the Pueblo Nuevo Cemetery has undergone numerous modifications and expansions. The most important occurred in 1849; In that year, Joan Nolla built the pantheon enclosure, where the work of well-known architects and sculptors of the time was concentrated. In this new space, the will of the Barcelona bourgeoisie of the mid-19th century to exhibit, even in their graves, their opulence and social prestige is revealed. In 1888 it was enlarged again by Leandre Albareda.
In 2004 the "Cemeteries Route" of Barcelona, to publicize the monumental and tourist attraction of the city's cemeteries. In it, the Pueblo Nuevo Cemetery is an outstanding part of this route along with the Montjuïc Cemetery.
