Necromancy
The necromancy, necromancy or necromancy (from the lat. necromantīa, and this from the Greek νεκρομαντεία; union of necros «death» and mantīa «divination») is a branch of sorcery, generally considered black, which consists of divination by examining the viscera of the dead and the invocation of spirits requiring, as the case may be, contact with their corpses or possessions in life.[citation required]
Necromancy is the discipline or branch of divination dedicated to predicting the future through the invocation of spirits. It is an ancient practice common to the mystical or supernatural tradition of various cultures, including Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Persian, etc. It is still exercised today and seeks contact with the other side, that is, the place of the dead.[citation required]
The haruspicine (its practitioner is called the haruspex) was a divinatory discipline of Ancient Rome that also tried to divine the future through the examination of the viscera, but, unlike necromancy, it focused on the entrails of animals immolated in honor of some god.[citation required]
Necromancy in fiction
The necromancer is a type of sorcerer, a regular figure in fantasy literature and some role-playing games as a force argument. Vampires are often said to have necromantic powers.[citation needed]
The view of necromancers in literary fiction is that they are mortal sorcerers who have studied the forbidden arts in an attempt to escape death. They are extremely dangerous individuals who possess in-depth knowledge of necromantic sorcery. Necromancers study the sorcery that allows them to control the undead, communicate with spirits, and animate their corpses (zombies, skeletons...) to serve him. [citation required]
Necromancy in history
The classic case of necromancy is that of the witch of Endor, described in the Bible (1 Samuel 28), where she invoked the spirit of Samuel at the request of King Saul, but the laws of Deuteronomy already warned against Canaanite practice of practicing divination, and very directly through recourse to the dead. This is why, according to the Judeo-Christian tradition, the king's action is considered an indicator of her spiritual and moral decline.
Strabo speaks of necromancy as the main form of divination among the peoples of Persia and it is believed that it was also widespread among the Chaldeans, in Etruria, and in Babylonia. In the Odyssey, Odysseus travels to Hades and tries to summon the spirits of the dead using spells taught to him by Circe.[citation needed]
Von Eschbach already mentions necromancy in Perzeval, a magician named Clinschor learns in ancient Persia (Persis) the power to control all the spirits that inhabit between the earth and the firmament.[citation required]
In Greece, Rome and Carthage it must have been popular, both in its invocation of spirits and divination through corpses.[citation needed]
Necromancy, especially in its form of invoking the spirits of the dead for magical or divinatory purposes, is a common practice in ancient religions from Africa, such as voodoo, palo mayombe, and certain branches of spiritualism and Santeria.[citation required]
