Nebrija University
The Nebrija University is a private and independent Spanish university, based in the city of Madrid and with other campuses in the Community of Madrid. This educational institution founded in 1995, welcomes more than 12,000 students of 56 different nationalities.
Its name pays homage to Elio Antonio de Nebrija, father of the first Castilian grammar, written in 1492.
The University offers undergraduate and postgraduate university studies, as well as doctoral school, international studies and languages.
History
Nebrija University began its trajectory with the inauguration of the Center for Hispanic Studies on July 31, 1985. Due to the humanist and linguistic vocation of the initial collaborators, the center takes the name of Elio Antonio de Nebrija, author of the first Castilian grammar, published in 1492.
Teaching the Spanish language and culture to foreign students and mitigating the need for training of professionals who teach Spanish as a foreign language was the first objective of the Nebrija institution.
After its inauguration in 1989, the Universitas Nebrissensis, as the organization had been called, was officially recognized as a higher education institution with the addition to its academic offer of the first two university degrees in the history of Nebrija: the Higher Graduate in Business Management and Higher Graduate in International Business Management, to which two courses later would be added the qualifications in Communication Sciences and Applied Languages.
With the appearance of the Universities Law that authorized the creation of private universities in Spain, the leaders of the project designed the creation of the Nebrija University, presenting the report for its recognition in July 1992.
Finally, on July 17, 1995, the Antonio de Nebrija University would be officially recognized as a private university by the Cortes Generales.
Since 1995, a stage of development began for Nebrija University. From the homologation until the year 2000, Nebrija University developed 14 official degrees with 31 curricular itineraries in the areas of Philology and Applied Modern Languages; Legal, Economic and Business Sciences; Communication Sciences, Journalism and Advertising; and Computer Engineering. Also 8 postgraduate programs and its first 2 Doctorates: Doctorate in Linguistics Applied to the Teaching of Spanish as a Foreign Language and the Doctorate in Tourism.
In the 2003-2004 academic year, Nebrija University adapted its academic model to the impositions and requirements of the European Higher Education Area which established, for all universities, the training of students in skills, support for international mobility, adaptation to the labor market and equivalence in knowledge standards.
Nebrija University began the Bologna Plan in the 2008-2009 academic year and since 2009 has had 9 undergraduate degrees adapted to the European Higher Education Area.
Starting in 2010, with all the programs adapted to the European Higher Education Area, a period of growth began that was consolidated with the opening of the Nebrija Branches and Institutes abroad, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, China and Indonesia.
