National University of Distance Education
The National University of Distance Education (UNED) is a Spanish public university of national scope, created in 1972 and which is administratively linked to the Ministry of Universities. It is the first university in Spain by number of students enrolled, with 156,975 students.
Its headquarters are in the city of Madrid, on the Senda del Rey and Ciudad Universitaria university campuses, although it has a wide network of associated centers spread throughout the Spanish territory and part of the foreigner.
UNED is characterized by offering a blended distance education modality, based on new technologies and traditional systems through the following means: virtual courses on the Internet (forums, videoconferences, webconferences, virtual whiteboard, laboratories, etc.), reference books in their field, teachers' notes, in combination with face-to-face or virtual tutorials in cities where it has associated centers through the AVIP system. The UNED does not require a cut-off grade, nor does it impose quotas or maximum number of students in each grade. UNED studies are based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) European credit system.
Historical overview
UNED has its roots in the project of the Universidad Libre a Distancia (UNILAD), an institution planned in the early seventies with the aim of bringing higher education to those population centers that did not They had a university, thus enabling access to university studies to people who, due to their place of residence or any other personal difficulty, could not attend the university in person.
In August 1972, the Universidad Libre a Distancia was endowed with a legal framework and thus the National University of Distance Education was officially founded, at state level and dependent on the Ministry of Education of Spain. From then on, the UNED began the creation of its different local centers, not only in Spain but also abroad.
Currently the UNED offers not only official university studies (degrees, masters and doctorates) but also permanent training programs, language courses and courses and entrance exams for people over 25, 40 and 45 years of age, among other studies.
Education centers
The UNED Headquarters, located in the city of Madrid, is currently made up of nine faculties and two university schools, with their corresponding sections and departments, like the rest of the country's universities, and the professors responsible for teaching and research of different subjects. The UNED, in addition to permanent professors (Full Professors and Full Professors), has contracted professors (associates, assistants, collaborating doctor assistants and contracted doctors) on its staff.
Currently, UNED has the following faculties and schools:

Associated Centers
UNED has a network of Associated Centers that allow students to visit a university center, consult with their tutor, take their exams, and access computer and library services. In 2020, UNED has 62 associated centers in Spain, being the first and dean created on the island of Gran Canaria in 1973 and the last one in Madrid-Sur founded in 2010. It also has another 15 abroad.
The Associated Centers support the teachings of the UNED and promote the cultural progress of the environment where they are located. In practice, they are basic institutions of the UNED system, where the student is received, guided and assisted in person. They facilitate socialization, organize face-to-face tests, provide material support resources and act as links between the student and the Headquarters.
They are autonomous organizations that depend on the Headquarters for academic matters, but that have been created by local initiative and are sponsored, through the corresponding agreements, by corporations or public and private entities.
The figure of the teacher-tutor, present in the Associated Centers, is the most significant and constitutes the link between the teacher in charge of the Headquarters and the student. His mission is focused on guidance activities, following the guidelines of the corresponding teaching team, and helping students in their individual study and in carrying out practical tasks.

Covid Times
During the covid pandemic, face-to-face classes at partner centers were interrupted. It was proposed that the teachers carry out the tutorials from their own homes.
For the exams, the exams in the centers associated with the AVEX system were alternated. This system, due to the respect for the privacy of the students, did not include any security measures of the software type, that is, through this system they do not have access to the screen of the device that takes the exam, nor what they are seeing on that moment. The only thing that was recorded was the IP, and it was required that the camera be active, since at random moments that the student would not know when they happen, photographs are taken to verify the correct resolution of the exam, and that no type of illegality during the resolution of this.
There was some controversy among the students, due to the complaint filed by the UNED against a group of students, who were sharing the answers via WhatsApp during an exam, committing such an illegality.
The model has been maintained until the September 2021 call. Even so, this is not without controversy, since students have already filed numerous lawsuits, since the "Omicrón" is raising the cases to gigantic numbers.
However, the UNED model was echoed throughout education and face-to-face universities adopted its exemplary model in order to resolve the situation online.[citation required]
50th anniversary
In 2022, the 50th anniversary of the founding of UNED will be completed. To commemorate his birth, a very diverse program of activities has been developed with academic acts, institutional events, conferences, celebrations and publications.
