National Soccer League of Honduras
The Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Honduras, also known as «Liga Betcris», after the name of its sponsor, is the most important professional soccer tournament in Honduras. This soccer league was founded on May 10, 1964. Its first tournament was held in 1965, with the participation of 10 clubs. Its first champion was Platense FC and its last champion was Olimpia.
From the 1963/64 season to 1996/1997, the League held one tournament per year. From then on, the league's competition system changed, giving rise to two tournaments per year. These tournaments, called Apertura and Clausura, have had, through the years, different competition formats.
Most of the titles in the Betcris League are distributed among the so-called big teams; Olympia, Motagua, Real España and Marathon. Being the super classic of the Betcris Olimpia vs. Motagua League, being the biggest clubs of titles has allowed these clubs to represent Honduras internationally in a greater number of opportunities. Internationally, Olimpia is the most successful club in the league, having won two CONCACAF titles and a club world cup qualification.
Currently the Betcris League tournament classifies six teams for post-season games. Of those six classified, the first two qualify directly for the semifinals, while from third to sixth place the last two classified for the semifinals are played, facing each other Third vs. Sixth and Fourth vs. Fifth in round-trip matches, in the semifinals, the first place will face the one that has obtained the worst score in the regular rounds.
History
Foundation
In Honduras there was no soccer organization at the beginning of the 20th century, although there were already clubs such as Club Deportivo Olimpia founded in 1912 in Tegucigalpa, being the oldest to date on record. Later the teams were founded, Marathón in 1925 from San Pedro Sula, Excelsior from Puerto Cortés in 1925, the “Tejeros” from Spain in 1926, Motagua from Tegucigalpa in 1928, Naco from La Ceiba and Club España from San Pedro Sula in 1929. The birth of these soccer clubs gave rise to amateur tournaments in the country. The first national level tournament was held in 1928.
In 1964, Mr. Federico Fortín Aguilar led a group of enthusiastic soccer lovers to found the Liga Nacional de Fútbol No Amateur de Primera División. Present at the meeting were: Óscar Kafaty, president of the Honduras Extra-School Sports Federation, as well as his secretary; Andrés Torres Rodríguez and the first vocal Valentín Bonilla.
For the clubs involved, they gathered for this historic event: Humberto Soriano Aguilar, Rubén M. Viana, for Platense; for Olimpia Hermes Bertrand Anduray, Carlos F Matute, Troya Edgardo Ortiz Rivera, Club Spain Carlos M. Sánchez, Club Honduras El Progreso Carlos Hall and René Bendeck, Vida Ramón Fernández, Marathon Alfredo Bueso Soto, Motagua Antonio C. Bustillo, Juan Núñez Chávez, La Salle Professor Irene Castañeda F. Emeritus Hernández, Atlético Español Glidden Hugo Más Cárdenas and Carlos Borjas.
The first sessions of the Honduran National League lasted between April 3 and 4 of the same month. On May 10, 1964, the announcement of the creation of the semi-professional Soccer League became official; which was baptized with the name: National Non-Amateur Soccer League.
The first Board of Directors of the National League was made up as follows: President Óscar Lara Mejía (CD Spain), Members José E. Coello (Vida), Antonio Vigó Fariño (La Salle) René Bendeck (Honduras), Jesús J. Handal (Honduras), Prosecutor Humberto Soriano Solís (Platense), Secretary Alfredo Bueso Soto/(Marathón).
The founding teams for the National League are CD España, Marathón, Motagua, CD Olimpia, Troya, Platense, Honduras, Vida, La Salle, Atlético Español. These teams were in the top tournament at that time and were invited to form part of the foundation in the League, except for CD España, which was in the bottom tournament and was invited for its journey up to that time. The members of the First Board of Directors of the LNFNAH were entirely representatives of teams from the north coast, who, with the exception of Club Vida, had not won any title, leaving the teams from the capital: Atlético Español, Olimpia, Motagua and Troya. without any representation.
Thus, on May 10, the National Non-Amateur Soccer League of Honduras (LNFNAH) was founded, with headquarters in the city of San Pedro Sula, which from 1965 began to organize soccer championships. The members of the First Board of Directors were: President Oscar Lara Mejía (CD Spain), Secretary Alfredo Bueso Soto (Marathón), Prosecutor Humberto Soriano Solís (Platense), Members José E. Coello (Vida), Antonio Vigó Fariño (La Salle), René Bendeck (Honduras), and Jesús J. Handal (Honduras).
First tournament
The first tournament of the National Non-Amateur Soccer League of Honduras was held with the participation of 10 clubs, namely: Atlético Español, Olimpia, Motagua and Troya from the capital of the Republic; Marathón, Spain and La Salle from the city of San Pedro Sula; Honduras from the city of El Progreso, Platense from Puerto Cortés and Vida from La Ceiba. The first day was held on July 18, 1965 with the meetings between; Olimpia (3-0) Marathón, Spain (1-0) Troya, Honduras (3-0) A. Español, Vida (4-1) Motagua and Platense (6-2) La Salle.
The first scorer of the Honduran National League championship was Pedro Deras of Club Honduras. On the first date, they also scored: Domingo 'Toncontín' Ferrera (1) and Rosendo 'Chendo' Rodríguez (2) for Club Deportivo Olimpia. Carlos Handal for Club Spain, Pablo Perdomo (1) for Club Honduras.
For Club Deportivo Vida they scored: Morris Garden, 'Craka' Brooks, 'Chuna' Blanco and by the Motagua Amado Castillo. In the victory of Club Deportivo Platense, the first to score were the players; Raúl Betancourt (2) Félix 'Butter' Guerra (2), Gilberto Zavala (1) and Ricardo Fúnez (1). For La Salle they thrashed; Henderson and Enrique Grey. The latter, was converted at the end; the first top scorer in the Honduran National Soccer League.
At the end of the first league tournament, Club Deportivo Platense was champion. Platense, like the other clubs, played 18 games of which they won 11, drew 5 and lost only two, to total 27 points. This club scored 42 goals and conceded 23. While Club Deportivo Olimpia was runner-up in the tournament with 26 points, and Atlético Español finished last with only 9 points out of 36 possible.
Evolution
After the first tournament, the National League held 6 competitions without interruption, until 1972, when the League decided to declare the championship void. This, to protect the interests of some so-called big teams, such as the Marathon Sports Club, which was in danger of relegation.
In 1978 another crisis occurred. The struggle for power in National League soccer caused divisions between the northern and central teams. To resolve this situation, the managers of the League and the teams had to hold an emergency meeting at Lake Yojoa, to end the differences that threatened the well-being of National League soccer.
In nearly half a century of existence, except for competition formats, the National League has not evolved. In recent years, attendance at stadiums has dropped considerably. This is due to violence, poor entertainment, and discomfort in the stadiums where the National League games are played. Perhaps the only important change that the Honduran League had since its founding originated with the arrival of the XXI century, when Liga Nacional de Fútbol No Hombre, became a completely professional organization and was renamed the Liga Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Honduras.
On July 10, 2021, an important sponsorship contract is signed with Betcris, which is a sponsor of the Ecuadorian soccer league, the NFL, the MLB and the Mexican league or MX league. The league is renamed Liga Betcris leaving behind his former sponsor Salva Vida.
Competition system
The bases of competition for the National League have changed. Until 1973, tournaments were played on a regular basis, and the team with the best score at the end of the championship was crowned champion. In 1977 the League adjusted the format again, substituting the post-season games from home run to pentagon.
For the 1997/98 season, the competition system changed again. The long tournaments disappeared; giving rise to two tournaments in one year (Opening and Closing). The format of this competition classifies 6 teams. These faced each other like this: 1st Vs 6th, 2nd Vs 5th and 3rd. Vs 4th. Later this format underwent another change. The six-team qualification to the final phase was replaced by a four-team group. They faced each other like this: 1st Vs 4th and 2nd. Vs 3rd. The winners of these keys earned the right to play in the final. At a competitive level, this system came to greatly benefit the Olimpia, Marathón and Motagua clubs. Among these three clubs, the majority of titles and finals played are shared.
For the 2011-2012 Opening Tournament, the League once again changed the competition system. In an assembly held in San Pedro Sula on July 15, 2011. The directors of the National League decided that the clubs that finish in first and second place in the standings, await their rivals who would come out of the clashes between the third-sixth and fourth-fifth place clubs. This as a kind of playoff.
"The team that finishes in first place in the standings, will face the club that obtained the worst score of the clubs that advance to the final group. Similarly, the second place will have the duel to seek a ticket to the final against the team that has the best third score of the four semifinalists, the 1st against the 4th and 2nd against the 3rd will be respected.& #34;
"Under the new format of six teams qualifying for the postseason, the dominance of the so-called big teams declined and meant the opportunity for the small teams to fight for the title. For example, the 2012-13 Apertura gave Victoria the opportunity to fight C.D. Olympia."
"While in the Clausura of the same year, three of the greats were eliminated, while Platense F.C. Deportes Savio and Real Sociedad reached the semifinals. The latter reached the final. Not only that, this phenomenon also meant better income in the economy of these small clubs. Since by advancing to the final instances, they increased the influx of fans in their play-offs and semifinals."
Change to pentagonal format
On June 28, 2019, at a meeting of the National League board of directors, it was agreed to change the tournament to the Pentagonal format. Nine teams voted in favor of the change, while Motagua voted against it.
In the new format the same 18 regular laps are maintained. The leader after the two rounds automatically qualifies for the final, while the other place in the final is obtained by the pentagonal champion, to which the first five teams in the general table (including the leader) qualify. Each team will play one match against all other teams, and the location of each match depends on the position of each team. It will be done as follows:
First day |
---|
fifth place of the table receives the 1.o |
second place of the table receives the 3.o |
fourth place rests |
Second day |
---|
fifth place of the table receives the fourth |
1.♪ place of the table receives the 3.o |
second place rests |
Third day |
---|
fourth place of the board receives the second |
3.♪ location of the table receives the fifth |
1.♪ place rest |
Fourth session |
---|
fourth place of the table receives to the 1.o |
second place receives the fifth |
3.♪ place rest |
Once all the previous matches have been played, the winner of the pentagonal is determined based on the number of points obtained. If the champion of the pentagonal is the same as the regular laps, he is considered champion, otherwise, a grand final will be played between the champion of the pentagonal and the leader of the regular laps.
Qualification to international tournaments
The league champion with the most points between the opening tournament and the closing tournament automatically qualifies for the CONCACAF Champions League, as Honduras 1.
If the same club wins the Opening and Closing, this will automatically become Honduras 1, and Honduras 2 would be the runner-up with the best score in both Tournaments, it will also be taken take into account a third team which at the end of both tournaments is located behind the champions, or the champion or runner-up as "Honduras 3".
"Honduras 2" and "Honduras 3" will participate in the tournament prior to the CONCACAF Champions League, in which only the champion of said tournament will be able to play in the elite tournament of the zone.
Olympia is the team that qualifies for these tournaments the most times.
