Nangarhar Province

Nangarhar Province is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, and has 22 districts. It is located in the east of the country, bordering Pakistan. Its capital is Jalalabad.

More than 1,436,000 inhabitants live in this province (it is the third province in number of inhabitants), it is very steep and one of the areas where Osama bin Laden was suspected of hiding.
On the outskirts of the city of Jalalabad is Nangarhar University, it is the second university in the country, and one of the most renowned. This region has large, fertile valleys suitable for raising livestock. Olive trees, cherry trees, apple trees, pear trees, potatoes, tomatoes, onions are grown, and approximately 75% of the poppy (Papaver somniferum) in the country is cultivated: about 1,600 tons of opium (equivalent to 60%). of European consumption)

Politics

Like the rest of the country, the province is led by a Provincial Governor, (Gul Aghza Sherzai as of August 2012^[update]) and a governor for each of its districts. Since 2001 and after the flight of the Taliban, they are gradually returning to the province. More recently, the Islamic State is displacing them.
