Najaf (Arabic: النجف Al-Najaf) is one of the eighteen governorates that make up the republic of Iraq. Its capital is the homonymous Najaf. Located in the center-west of the country, it borders Al-Anbar to the northwest, Kerbala and Babylon to the north, Cadisia to the northeast, Mutana to the southeast, and Saudi Arabia to the southwest. With 28,824 km² it is the fourth largest governorate —behind Al-Anbar, Mutana and Nineveh— and with 45 inhabitants/km², the third least densely populated, ahead of Mutana and Al-Anbar, the least densely populated.
