Mycoplasma hominis is a species of bacterium in the Mycoplasmataceae family. It belongs to level 1 biohazard.[citation needed]

Features

Small filamentous facultative anaerobic microorganism without cell wall. It metabolizes arginine but not glucose. Fried egg-shaped colonies. It can be easily spread through any place contaminated by saliva or any object in which an infected person has previously been.

Infection

Pyelonephritis, endometritis, pelvic inflammatory disease, post abortion or postpartum fever, salpingitis, infertility, preterm delivery, neonatal infections.

Treatment

To choose the most appropriate antibiotic, culture must be carried out because bacteria can develop resistance.

Doxycycline 100 mg. every 12 hours, orally, for 7 or 15 days. Clarithromycin 500 mg. every 12 hours, orally, for 7 days. Never start antibiotic treatment without consulting a doctor.

Other tetracyclines such as minocycline, or other macrolides such as azithromycin are an alternative.
