Mr. Frio (Victor Fries) is a fictional supervillain and antihero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. Created by writer Dave Wood and artist Sheldon Moldoff, he first appeared in Batman #121 (February 1959) as the ice-based criminal Mr. Zero. Shortly after his name was changed to "Mr. Cold", the character's origin story was tweaked to match that created by writer Paul Dini for Batman: The Animated Series. Dr. Victor Fries is a cryogenics expert in Gotham City who was caught in a laboratory mishap while trying to cure his terminally ill wife, Nora; the accident drastically reduced his body temperature to below zero levels, forcing him to wear a cryogenic suit to survive. This representation of Mr. Cold has since remained one of the most recurring enemies of the superhero Batman and belongs to the group of adversaries that make up his center of the rogues gallery.

IGN's list of the 100 Greatest Comic Book Villains of All Time ranked Mr. Freeze as #67. The character has been portrayed in live action by George Sanders, Otto Preminger, and Eli Wallach on the show television Batman; by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1997 film Batman & robin; and by Nathan Darrow on the Fox crime series Gotham. He has also been voiced by Michael Ansara in the DC Comics Animated Universe, by Clancy Brown in The Batman , and by Maurice LaMarche in the Batman: Arkham video game franchise..

Overview

His first appearance was in Batman #121 (February 1959).

Originally named Mr. Zero, Mr. Cold was renamed and popularized in the 1960s television series.

With Batman: The Animated Series the new background of the character greatly increased his popularity by adding the tragic story of his wife's illness and the melancholy suffered by her loss, going from being a simple criminal who committed crimes with his theme of freezing everything, to being an anti-villain with a tragic past, background that would be maintained in his subsequent appearances. In 1997 the character is played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie Batman & Robin.

Like most Batman villains, Mr. Freeze plans his crimes around a specific theme, in his case, ice and cold. He has an unusual problem that doesn't allow him to resist temperatures above 0 degrees. He keeps his environment at the optimum temperature using weapons and special equipment. Mr. Cold's obsession with ice has to do with a personal tragedy, so his crimes are attempts to make the world as cold and miserable as he is.

Biography of fictional character

Since his first appearance in 1959, Mr. Freeze was depicted as one of many "jokes" (see also Killer Moth) as common enemies of Batman. He was originally called Mr. Zero, but the producers of the Batman television series in the 1960s changed the name to Cold and they depicted Batman addressing him as "Dr. Art Schivel",and the name transferred quickly into comics. The actors who played Cold were George Sanders, Otto Preminger, and Eli Wallach. In the pre-Crisis of Continuity, it is explained that Mr. Freeze is a rogue scientist whose design for an 'ice gun' was unsuccessful. it doesn't work when he inadvertently spills cryogenic chemicals on himself, causing him to need freezing temperatures to survive.

Modern Age

Cold was revamped using a background similar to that created by Paul Dini for Batman: The Animated Series.Dr. Victor Fries, Ph.D. (last name pronounced "fris") was a brilliant cryogenicist. As a child, he is fascinated with cryonics, so he starts freezing animals. His parents are horrified by his "hobby" and he is sent to a strict boarding school, where he is miserable and feels alienated from humanity. At university, he meets a woman named Nora, whom he eventually marries.

Nora contracts a fatal disease 1½ years after Bruce Wayne becomes Batman, so Fries begins developing a freeze ray for GothCorp to preserve her in suspended animation until a cure can be found. Fries' boss, Ferris Boyle, decides to tell the mob about the weapon, prompting Batman to create a team of specialists to help him do his job better. As Fries puts Nora into suspended animation, Boyle interrupts and tampers with the experiment, resulting in an explosion that kills Nora. Fries survives, but the chemicals from the freeze ray drop her body temperature to the point that he must wear a cryogenic suit to survive. He swears revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife (whom he often talks to), and becomes Mr. Freeze, the first superpowered villain Batman has faced in this continuity. Eventually, Batman's agents find Freeze, who shoots one of them with his freeze gun, but Batman eventually stops him.

Frio's crimes involve freezing everyone and everything he encounters, so he never forges alliances with the other criminals in Gotham, preferring to work alone. On rare occasions, he has worked with another member of Batman's rogues gallery, usually as an enforcer for Gotham mob bosses such as the Penguin and Black Mask. In one of his notable outfits, Freeze builds a cryogenic machine so Hush can get revenge on Batman, Freeze's outfit allowing Hush to preserve Catwoman's surgically removed heart to use as a means to threaten his life.

During his time with the Secret Society of Super Villains, he designs a sub-zero machine for Nyssa al Ghul in exchange for the use of his Lazarus Pit. He tries to restore Nora's life without waiting for the necessary adjustment in the pool chemicals; She comes back to life as the crooked Lazara and runs away. She blames her husband for his plight, and she walks away from him.

The New 52

In September 2011, The New 52 rebooted the DC continuity. In this new timeline, during the Night of Owls crossover, the Court of Owls sends assassins known as Claws to kill 40 of Gotham's most important citizens, including Mr.. Cold. Red Hood, Starfire, and Arsenal choose to save him, subsequently sending him into Batgirl's custody.

In the Batman Annual (vol. 2) #1 introduces a new origin for Mr. Cold. Here, Victor Fries' fascination with cryonics began when he was a child and his mother fell through the ice of a frozen lake. The ice was able to preserve her long enough for help to arrive from her, sparking his lifelong obsession with the cold. It is later revealed that the accident left Fries' mother in constant pain, and Fries ended her suffering by pushing her into the same frozen lake. In this new origin, Nora was never Fries's wife. Her name was Nora Fields, a woman born in 1943. When Nora was 23, she was diagnosed with an incurable heart condition, so her family placed her in cryogenic stasis in hopes of finding a cure in the future. Fries, having written his doctoral thesis on Nora, was positioned as a researcher and cryogenic technician at Wayne Enterprises.

Eventually, he fell in love with Nora and set about finding a reliable method to slowly thaw cryogenic subjects. However, Bruce Wayne ordered the project shut down, as he became uncomfortable with Fries' obsession with Nora. Furious, Fries threw a chair at Wayne, who dodged the attack; the chair crashed into a series of cryonic chemical tanks, the contents of which sprayed on Fries, transforming him into Mr. Freeze.

The Court of Owls use Freeze's cryogenic freezing formula to revive his claws, and then attempt to kill him. Cold survives, but is captured by the Red Hood and sent to Arkham Asylum. He escapes soon after and rearms with Penguin's help. Cold decides to kill Bruce Wayne and take Nora, whom he believes to be his wife, so they can leave Gotham City behind forever. Infiltrating Wayne Enterprises, Freeze has a brief fight with Nightwing and Robin, but he subdues them. Cold then goes to the attic, where he finds Batman and the frozen Nora. Batman defeats Mr. Freeze by injecting his suit with the thawing formula, which he had attempted to use to revive Nora from suspended animation.

During the Eternal Evil storyline, Freeze appears as a member of the Secret Society of Super Villains at the time the Crime Syndicate arrived from his world. The Scarecrow later visits Mr. Cold to inform him about the war at Blackgate Penitentiary. The Man-Bats are able to bring the remaining claws to Mr. Cold after the Man-Bat and Scarecrow steal them from Blackgate. they encounter the villains when they land on their territory. Mr. Freeze tells Master of Mirrors II, he is not interested in cashing in on the bounty on their heads, only to use the Weather Wizard to create the optimal conditions for Let him freeze Gotham. As the Rogues fight the two, Black Mask (along with his False Face society) arrives to capture the Rogues for the bounty.

DC Rebirth

In the Watchmen sequel, Doomsday Clock, Freeze is among the villains who attend the clandestine meeting held by the Riddler that discusses the Superman theory. As Comedian breaks up the meeting, Frio's helmet is pierced by a bullet fired by an unseen combatant.

In the "The Ends of Earth" from All-Star Batman, Freeze has awakened many people who have been held in cryogenic stasis, using them as an army to steal resources for his research to cure his wife Nora, himself, and everyone from these people, and plans to release deadly bacteria held in one of the world's oldest ice cores to create a new world, but Batman has injected himself with a cold-resistant virus that becomes airborne when his skin is exposed and can kill the spores.

Powers and abilities

Like most Batman villains, Mr. Freeze plans his crimes around a specific theme; In his case, ice, snow, and cold, he freezes areas around him with special weapons and equipment, most notably a "freezing gun"; hand. His cooling suit grants him superhuman strength and durability, making him a powerful villain in Batman's rogues gallery.

In the Underworld Unleashed storyline, the demon Neron gives Mr. Freeze the ability to generate sub-zero temperatures, as he no longer needs his freeze gun and chill suit. However, after his encounter with Green Lantern, Donna Troy, and Purgatory in Central Park, he reverted to his original sub-zero biology. He then gained new sub-zero armor and weaponry.

As a result of this, a massive freeze cannon was built under a lighthouse on the Gotham City shoreline. The superweapon is discovered by Neo-Joker (the second Harley Quinn who felt that by taking pills to preserve his sanity, Jack Napier) was destroying the most beautiful part of himself) and is used to freeze most, if not all, of Gotham. Freeze is able to reverse the effects with the help of Batgirl. While the George Sanders version wore the classic cooled suit, the Otto Preminger and Eli Wallach versions wore a "Freeze Necklace" around the neck that went with Mr. Cold. Before Mr. Cold was in the series, he was always called Mr. Zero. In this version, he's still a champion who likes comics and is given an alias of "Dr. Art Schivel". In his first appearance "Instant Freeze", it was revealed that it was Batman who spilled cryogenic chemicals on Schivel during an attempted arrest.
