MPlayer is a cross-platform media player released under the GPL license.

Plays most supported MPEG, VOB, AVI, OGG/OGM, MKV, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV, QT/MOV/MP4, FLI, RM, NuppelVideo, YUV4MPEG, FILM, RoQ, PVA files by some native codecs, XAnim, and Win32 DLL's. It can also play VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx and DivX/Xvid 3/4/5.

It also comes with the option for subtitles, supporting 14 different formats (MicroDVD, SubRip, SubViewer, Sami, VPlayer, RT, SSA, AQTitle, JACOsub, VobSub, CC, OGM, PJS and MPsub).

Along with the MPlayer download package, you can find the MEncoder application, an essential tool for the video or audio encoding process. It also comes by default with a GUI made in GTK+ called gmplayer, although there are also some other GUI's such as SMPlayer, which is made in Qt.

The player can work on most platforms, including Linux, Unix derivatives, Mac OS X, Syllable, MorphOS, AmigaOS and also on Windows. There are also derivatives of DOS and FreeDOS and on the Wii game console (v. Mplayer CE).

  • WMA 9 (WMAv3), Audio Voxware, ACELP.net etc. (using x86 DLLs)
