The national flag of Mozambique was adopted on May 1, 1983. It features the image of an AK-47 rifle and is the only flag in the world to depict a modern rifle.

The flag is based on that of the Mozambique Liberation Front FRELIMO. The FRELIMO flag was used for a brief period, just after the country's independence from Portugal. The current flag looks very similar and the emblem hasn't changed.

In 2005, a contest was organized to create a new flag for the state. More than 100 proposals were sent, but RENAMO did not like the one that was chosen. The national anthem was also changed. The people in favor of Frelimo did not want to remove the image of the AK-47 assault rifle that symbolizes the people's fights for the country's independence; the proposed changes were not liked by the population, which spoke out against them. Finally the matter was postponed.
