Mos Eisley Canteen
The Chalmun Spaceport Cantina, popularly known as the Mos Eisley Cantina, is a fictional establishment from the Star Wars film saga. Within the story, it is located in the port city of Mos Eisley on the planet Tatooine, and stands out for the terrible reputation of its clientele, being frequented by pirates, smugglers, hitmen and other outlaw characters of all races of the Galaxy.
Its interior is stuffy and dimly lit, and has a bar counter and several tables, as well as a music floor from which a band of Biths called "Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes". Although the presence of droids is prohibited in the canteen, the entry of weapons between customers is not regulated, and this, combined with the volatile nature of their bearers, makes violent altercations so frequent that the audience does not devote more than a few moments of attention.
The sets for the exterior of the canteen were filmed in the town of Ajim, in Tunisia, while its interior was shot at Elstree Studios in London.[citation needed]
The place is introduced in A New Hope, where Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi enter it in search of a pilot to take them to Alderaan. Among the exotic set of customers they meet Han Solo and Chewbacca, who agree to take them in their ship Millennium Falcon, but not before Solo starring in a shootout at one of the tables in which the bounty hunter Greedo is killed.
This saloon was owned by a Wookiee named Chalmun. It was set by the live music of the Figrin D'an band (actually, it was music composed by John Williams, like the rest of the soundtrack, but in a very different register, more influenced by jazz than for symphonic music). At the bar, Wuher served exotic drinks that could in a second kill one species or drive another into ecstasy.
