Mortar
The mortar, word from the Latin massa, is a type of mortar used as a construction material in masonry, made up of a mixture of lime, sand and water.
Features
The element that acts as a binder for the mixture is lime, which when dried acquires a very hard constitution, but less than that of concrete. Formerly it was widely used as a mortar to join stones or bricks in the construction of walls and houses. It is a simple, very cheap, durable material and easy to adapt to constructions. There is evidence of the use of lime mortars since the Neolithic, in the settlement of Çatalhöyük (Turkey).
Its consistency is more elastic than that of cement mortars, but it is less resistant, which is why the Romans gradually substituted this material as they developed the second.
