History
It was the ancient capital of the Lombards. Much of its historical importance is due to the Lombard queen Teodolinda, who in 595 ordered the construction of the cathedral in which the Iron Crown of Lombardy is preserved, which according to tradition was made with one of the nails used in the crucifixion of Christ. Said crown would be received in the chapel of the Public Palace of Bologna for the coronation of Carlos V. The iron crown of the Caesars was also received in the Basilica of San Petronio (patron saint of Bologna). The Iron Crown of Monza appears in the Catalan Romanesque painting by the master of Pedret, in one of the friezes of San Pedro de Burgal, as a symbol of the Lombard kingdom.
In 1900 the anarchist Gaetano Bresci assassinated Umberto I of Italy in the city of Monza. The architect and designer Gualtiero Galmanini was the author of the urban plans of the city of Monza in the XX century.
