The Montreux Jazz Festival is an annual jazz festival created in 1967 by Claude Nobs, which takes place in Montreux, Switzerland facing Lake Geneva. It is the best known of Switzerland's music festivals.

History

The Montreux Jazz Festival was founded in 1967 by Claude Nobs, Géo Voumard and René Langel with the help of brothers Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegün of Atlantic Records. The festival was initially held in the halls of the Montreux Casino, with the presence in those years of exclusively Jazz artists, names like Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, Bill Evans, Soft Machine, Weather Report, The Fourth Way, Nina Simone, Jan Garbarek and Ella Fitzgerald, but from the 1970s he opened up to other styles of music, including performances by artists such as Marianne Faithfull, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Deep Purple or Canned Heat, among others., although jazz continued to be the most important part of the event. The festival currently runs for two weeks and attracts over 200,000 spectators.

Carlos Santana first performed in Montreux in 1970, Van Morrison did so in 1974, and again in 1980. Other notable performances during the '70s and '80s include B.B. King, Albert King, Gary Moore, Don Ellis, Crossfire, Buddy Guy, Camarón de la Isla, Chuck Berry, George Clinton, Mel and Kim, Eric Clapton, Luther Allison, Bo Diddley, Stan Getz, Airto Moreira, Joe Henderson, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Charles Mingus, Etta James, Sonny Rollins, Son House, Count Basie, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Gilberto Gil, Ray Charles, Hermeto Pascoal, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Rory Gallagher, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Elis Regina, Les McCann, Eddie Harris, Mike Oldfield, Pasadena Roof Orchestra, New Order, Jaco Pastorius, Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band, Toto, Zucchero Fornaciari, André Geraissati, Korni Grupa, Jan Akkerman, Joe Satriani or Status Quo.

In 1993 the stage moved to the Montreux Convention Center in search of greater capacity. The number of visitors went from 75,000 in 1980 to 120,000 in 1994.

The festivals of the 90s counted with the presence of artists such as Sting, Camarón de la Isla, Bob Dylan, Fats Domino, Al Jarreau, Chaka Khan, Johnny Cash, Cheap Trick, Cheb Mami, Youssou N'Dour, Ice-T, Jazzmatazz, Earth, Wind & Fire, ZZ Top, Simply Red, Marisa Monte, George Benson, Alanis Morissette, David Bowie or Paul Simon.
