Monterrubio de la Sierra is a Spanish municipality and town in the province of Salamanca, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León. It is integrated within the region of Campo de Salamanca (Campo Charro). It belongs to the judicial district of Salamanca.

Its municipal area is made up of the towns of Cortos de Sacedón, Hernancobo, La Torre Zapata, Las Lomas, Miguel Muñoz, Monterrubio de la Sierra, Segovia de Sacedón and Segovia la Chicha, occupying a total area of 35.31 km² and according to the demographic data collected in the municipal register prepared by the INE in 2017, it has a population of 162 inhabitants.

History

Its foundation dates back to the repopulation carried out by the kings of León in the Middle Ages, then called Monte Ruvio, being integrated in late medieval times in the quarter of Peña del Rey in the jurisdiction of Salamanca, within the Kingdom of León. With the creation of the current provinces in 1833, Monterrubio de la Sierra was included in the province of Salamanca, within the Leonese Region.

Transportation

The DSA-206 highway crosses the municipality, which connects with Pedrosillo de los Aires to the south and with Buenavista to the north, in the area of the urbanizations of Las Canteras Hondas and Cuatro Calzadas and which allows the union with the N- 630 and the Ruta de la Plata highway, both connect Gijón with Seville and allow you to go both to the provincial capital and the north of the country as well as to Béjar and the southern part of the peninsula. At the exit of said motorway, the roundabout and the beginning of a hypothetical road that would allow the municipality and the residents to be linked more directly with it are built.

As far as public transport is concerned, after the closure of the Vía de la Plata railway route, there are no train services in any of the neighboring municipalities that had them nor a regular line with bus service. On the other hand, Salamanca Airport is the closest, being about 42km away.
