Maurice Lester Szyslak, better known as Moe Szyslak, is a fictional character from the animated television series The Simpsons, owner of the Moe's Tavern. The original voice is by Hank Azaria, and he appeared for the first time in the episode Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire. In Latin America he is dubbed by Jorge Ornelas, and in Spain he is dubbed by Juan Perucho. As he assured in one chapter, he is Dutch, despite the fact that in another chapter his inner child speaks to him in Italian, and even in another chapter he claimed to be half-Armenian, even so it is never clear. The character's name is a tribute to Norm from the Cheers series.

Hank Azaria stated that Moe's voice is based on Al Pacino's voice with a sore throat. In his first appearances, Moe had black hair, unlike in the current episodes where he has gray hair.

Name and nationality

Moe's full name is Maurice (pronounced Moris) Lester Szyslak. He is apparently an immigrant, and references have been made that he is Italian, Russian, Armenian and, lately, Dutch. In one chapter he said that he was born in Indiana, in the chapter The Springfield Connection Homer makes reference to the fact that his real name would be Moammar. His last name, Szyslak, appears to originate from Poland. He wants to hide at all costs that he is an immigrant. So much so that in the chapter in which they want to impose a controversial law in Springfield in which immigrants are deported -in which the Simpson family helps Apu to pass the exam to obtain his nationality-, Moe can be seen in the exam with a false mustache and covering his face, which clearly implies his immigration status. In a Season 20 episode, Moe mentions that he changed his name to save $300 on his saloon sign. As for his ancestry, Moe has even claimed that his grandparents were Irish in at least two episodes (among them, when The Simpsons went to Ireland, in which he points out that his grandmother was Irish).).

Occupation

Moe is the owner and sole bartender at Moe's Tavern, where his job is limited to serving Duff beer to the sparse clientele. That's where, from the beginning, he's been the butt of Bart's prank calls. On several occasions he has tried to reform Moe's Tavern, but both "Uncle Moe's Family Restaurant" like the innovative "M", they have failed (in this latest episode it is discovered that Moe was a straight A student at a hospitality academy).

In the episode Pygmoelian, Moe becomes an actor. In The Homer They Fall it is discovered that he was a boxer, and in the chapter HOMR , a surgeon without a professional title. He was also a snake charmer and an actor in a series (when he was a child). In the episode Moe Baby Blues he becomes Maggie's babysitter. He is also part of the Springfield fire department in the chapter Crook and Ladder in which the house of The Simpsons burns down. In the episode Homer Loves Flanders it is revealed that he secretly volunteers reading stories for the children in the Hospital and on Wednesdays for the poor in a charity center, which is why on that day he does not open your tavern In addition, in one episode it is shown how his tavern was once an ice cream parlor, however in the image in which he was shown, the children were not happy. He's also been seen as a con man, a poet, an Austin Powers impersonator, an animal dealer, a bowler, a pawnbroker, and even singing along with Aerosmith.

Social relations

Moe is an inveterate loner, which always puts him on the brink of suicide. He's unattractive (not to mention ugly enough), skinny, and grumpy (he actually had his face tucked in sporadically to improve his image), though that hasn't stopped him from fleetingly finding love. He had a relationship with a woman named Renee, another with the teacher Edna Krabappel and he has been seen especially interested in Marge Simpson, since he takes advantage of every opportunity that is presented to him to try to win her over. During the meeting held at the Simpson house for the funeral of Maude Flanders, Moe tells Ned Flanders that he was attracted to Maude. No less conflictive is his relationship with his clients at the Tavern: Barney Gumble, Homer Simpson, Lenny and Carl, among others.

In Moe Baby Blues, depressed because nobody loves him, he tries to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge and raising his arms to throw himself catches Maggie who had been thrown from the family car after it skidded to a halt. After the incident he will become her babysitter and the father figure that he sought so much in Homer and that he never found.

In the episode Eeny Teeny Maya Moe, he finds love again in the arms of Maya, a woman he met online and is as pretty as the pictures she sent her. However, she does not reach a meter in height, so Moe feels strange to introduce her to her friends and has a series of conflicts that distance him from her right after asking her to marry him. However Maya will appear again in The Wayz We Were, where she and Moe reconcile and Moe again asks her to marry him to which Maya accepts this time, leaving both happily engaged.

In From Russia Without Love, Bart plays a prank on Moe, ordering him a mail-order bride named Anastasia Alekova, supposedly from Russia, with whom Moe falls in love, but becomes reluctant to get involved. romantically with her because her heart had previously been broken many times, but after Anastasia leaves with Krusty the Clown, Moe decides to marry her, in the ceremony it is discovered that Anastasia was an American con artist who sought to take away her assets, before to which Moe calls off the wedding.

As for his relationship with Homer, he is usually a friend, but he is very unruly, as he always incites and yells when something has to be discussed in a group, he claims to be Homer's friend but goes against him when he is with other people. He also loves Marge, but this doesn't seem to matter to Homer since Moe always fails in her attempts, he knows much more about her.

Illegal activities

Moe's actions are always on the edge of the law: he nearly got kicked out of Springfield because of his immigration status. He has organized Russian roulette sessions and trafficked animals (panda bears and even an orca). He doesn't even have a license to run the tavern, since the license he holds has expired since 1979 and is only valid in the state of Rhode Island. Throughout the series they have even made health inspections to his bar due to its subhuman conditions, causing one of those inspectors (who was a friend of his) to be poisoned by ingesting a bad egg, arriving a less familiar substitute with Moe who closes the place for him In one episode he looks down the bar and sees a small crack where two eyes peek out, at the same time that you can hear "I'm starving", so that we know that he has also dedicated himself to harboring illegal immigrants, or perhaps holding someone hostage. He participates in the violation of Springfield's Prohibition Law by being the main supplier of beer to the town (helped by Homer), while it is prohibited. In addition, he is a surgeon without a degree or a career. He also stole Homer's recipe for an alcoholic drink and named it "Flamming Moe." ("Flameado de Moe" in Spain and "Llamarada Moe" in Latin America).

In the chapter The Seemingly Never-Ending Story it is said that Snake was an archaeologist similar to Indiana Jones and that he found a very valuable treasure, but Moe stole it and when he found out he said that he would take revenge and thus became a criminal. Moe, unable to leave with Edna, spends the treasury coins by listening to a song on the jukebox over and over again.

In the episode Lost Verizon it is revealed that Moe has installed a hidden microphone in the basement of the Simpson house in order to spy on Marge, unaware that he himself is being spied on by the FBI of the same way.
