Minami Torishima
Minami Torishima (南鳥島, Minami Torishima?) or Marcus Island is an isolated island located northwest of the Pacific Ocean. The meaning in Japanese is 'Southern Bird Island'. It has an area of 1.2 km². It is the easternmost territory of Japan 1,848 km southeast of Tokyo, and 1,267 km east of the nearest Japanese island, Minami Iōjima in the Ogasawara Islands, and forms a line between Tokyo and Wake Island, which is 1,415 km away. east-southeast. The nearest island is Farallón de Pájaros in the Mariana Islands, which is 1021 km to the west-southwest.
The island was discovered by the Spanish captain Andrés de Arriola in 1694, on the return voyage from Manila to Acapulco, but its location was not recorded until the 17th century XIX. It is mentioned for the first time in 1864, giving a position by a United States observation ship in 1874 and in 1879, Kiozaemon Saito set foot on land. Japan officially claimed the island on July 19, 1898.
During World War II, 4,000 Japanese soldiers were stationed on the island, which was attacked by the United States Navy in 1943, without achieving its surrender or occupation.
The island is currently used for weather observation and has a small radio station.
Administratively it is part of the Ogasawara Islands in Japan.
