Michiru Kaiō
Michiru Kaiō (海王 みちる Kaiō Michiru? sup>) alias Sailor Neptune (セーラーネプチューン< /span>Sērā Nepuchūn?, or "Warrior Neptune" in some translations) is a fictional character from the anime and manga series Sailor Moon. This character is first introduced in the third story arc of the original manga (known as the 'Infinity Arc'), as well as in the third season of the 1990s anime series, called Sailor Moon S, and in season 3 of Sailor Moon Crystal. She is one of the Sailor Senshi type warriors that appear in the plot, and within the group of Sailor Senshi of the Solar System she belongs to the team of the Sailor Senshi of the External Solar System; who have been in charge of protecting the Kingdom of the Moon and Silver Millennium since ancient times.
Both names by which she is known, Michiru Kaiō and Sailor Neptune, have been modified in the English and Spanish translations of this work. For example, the original Japanese name Michiru Kaiō was translated into English as Michelle Kaioh and in some versions into Spanish as Vicky Kaio, while Sailor Neptune's name was sometimes translated as Sailor Neptune or Warrior Neptune.
Michiru Kaiō is the reincarnation of Sailor Neptune, a Sailor Senshi type warrior who came from the planet Neptune and protected a kingdom called the Silver Millennium in her past life. When Michiru regains her memory of that previous life, she regains the supernatural powers she had as Sailor Neptune. From then on she once again adopts the identity and appearance of Sailor Neptune every time she must fight evil alongside Sailor Uranus, and later, also alongside Sailor Moon and her friends.
Profile
Michiru Kaiō is a young woman who can transform into Sailor Neptune, a warrior whose powers have great affinities with deep waters and the oceans. She has the appearance of a girl with wavy green or turquoise hair and eyes of the same color, whom her creator Naoko Takeuchi has described as Sailor Neptune, the "Warrior of the Deep Sea" whose powers represent qualities of sea water.
Michiru is a very talented girl who is Haruka Ten'ō's schoolmate, with whom she has a very intimate relationship (they are girlfriends). She has a lot of ease in performing in the arts, in addition to great elegance and natural femininity. However, in both the anime and the manga it is shown that she is capable of showing a strong character, and in the manga she is even gifted of some humorous moments when he gets angry. The protagonist of the series, Usagi Tsukino, meets this character first in her identity of Michiru Kaiō and then in her alternate identity of Sailor Neptune; her without finding out that Michiru Kaiō and Sailor Neptune are the same person until much later.

In Sailor Moon S it is noted that he also draws and paints paintings, exhibiting some of them in art galleries. Michiru likes swimming and like Sailor Mars she has a developed sixth sense that allows her to sense danger.
In some preliminary notes, the author of the series, Naoko Takeuchi, has described Michiru as a reticent girl, who can rarely know what she is thinking; but whose true personality she hides "a kindness as great as the sea." In the words of her creator, she is the type of woman who does not require the presence of men to move forward in her life. her, and it's scary when she gets angry. On the other hand, Takeuchi states that Michiru was created jointly with the character of Haruka (Sailor Uranus), as a pair of "complementary but opposite" characters, and destined from the beginning to fight alongside Sailor Pluto. Takeuchi has also said that Michiru is, in some ways, a calmer version of a character previously created by her, the villain Esmeralda: "(She) gives the feeling as if Esmeralda has calmed down."
In the first animated version from the 90s, the character is shown in a similar way; although with some differences. In this adaptation, Michiru is a very kind but reserved young woman who does not like to be treated with condescension; even if it means that her feelings may be hurt by others. Likewise, she also won't treat other people with too much deference. This attitude is alluded to in her backstory; where it is explained that although Michiru is a friendly person, she is not given to social exchange. For her part, the author of the original manga, Naoko Takeuchi, confessed to having felt stupefied by the changes made to Michiru's personality in this first animated series; But she was glad that the fans still liked her character.

Michiru at first lives alone, although in the version of the first anime she moves to live with Haruka, and takes the newly reborn Hotaru to live with them. In the sleeve version instead, Michiru (Neptune), Haruka (Uranus) and Setsuna (Sailor Pluto) move all three to a mansion to take care of Hotaru (Sailor Saturn).
The two kanji in KaiōMichiru's last name is translated as "mar" (Thousands kai?) and "king" ( ō?)I mean "King of the Sea." Together, they in turn constitute much of the name of the planet Neptune in Japanese, Kaiōsei. The name Michiru for its part is written in hiragan "michiru" (ち. michiru?); so its meaning is not inherent, though the word michiru in itself means "getting away." The dolls of this character that were sold by the company Irwin in Canada in 1998 came within packages that gave them the name "Nerissa".
Relationship with Sailor Uranus
In the course of the story, it is shown that Michiru, like Haruka (Sailor Uranus), considers her mission as Sailor Senshi as a duty that she must fulfill above all else. The two of them have more than a very intimate friendship and form a highly connected couple. Although their relationship is not implicitly sexual until later in the series, their romantic relationship in all versions of the story is very soon mentioned and understood as such by other characters in the series. It was also confirmed by Naoko Takeuchi, the manga's author, explicitly at a convention in San Diego in 1998.
Michiru and Haruka, as warriors, are initially distinguished from the other vigilantes by their way of fighting, by their cold blood and their calculating way of proceeding during battles. In the first anime, for example, They usually launch stratagems that are conceived as a secret between the two, avoiding sharing with the rest of the team the true nature of their plans until they have already been put into practice. On the other hand, in Sailor Stars it is mentioned that Michiru is the only person who can run at the same speed as Haruka when the latter is under her alternate identity of Sailor Uranus.
Biography
“ | He was part of a new era, when the tide unleashes his fury in Neptune; I am Sailor Neptune and will come into action. | ” |
—Sailor Neptune, first phrase in the animated series. |
Michiru's beginnings as "Sailor Neptune" They are only explained in the adaptation of the third season in the anime of the 90s. There it is told, through a flashback, that this character was one of the first warriors from the External Solar System to remember her past life in the ancient Millennium. of Silver (not counting Setsuna Meiō, alias "Sailor Pluto"). When it had been some time since the malevolent organization of the "Death Busters" (or Death Hunters) had begun to infiltrate extraterrestrial beings on planet Earth, Michiru suddenly discovered her own identity as the reincarnation of an ancient warrior from the Silver Millennium, with the mission of continuing to protect the Solar System in this second life.; therefore her duty was to fight them. What she did, then, was establish contact with Haruka Ten'ō, another reborn companion who had not yet remembered her past as Sailor Uranus. When she finally managed to find her, she learned that Haruka was a professional drag racer and began to feel great admiration for her. From then on she would always see her in her sports competitions.Once Haruka also remembered her past life, the two became part of an inseparable team, the team of Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune; to which Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn would later be added.
Beyond the differences between versions, however, at the time of her appearance she is always already watching over the malevolent Witches 5 with the help of Haruka, and both are already dedicated to fighting this group under their alternate identities as Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus. Her purpose is to prevent the Witches 5 and their allies, the Death Busters, from causing extraterrestrial beings to take over the planet. Eventually, it is revealed that Sailor Neptune possesses one of the three talismans needed to defeat these beings. This talisman is the 'Mirror of Deep Waters'. The other two talismans are the "Sword of Space" of Sailor Uranus and the "Garnet Stone" on Sailor Pluto's staff. When the Space Sword, the Waterdeep Mirror, and the Garnet Stone are gathered, these talismans can summon the Holy Grail or Moon Cup, an item that grants Sailor Moon new powers to defeat the Witches 5 and the Death Busters.
On the other hand, Sailor Neptune and Uranus at the same time try, from the beginning, to find the reborn Sailor Saturn (the warrior of destruction), who has also been reincarnated in the century XX. According to them, Sailor Saturn could destroy the world if, like them, she regains the memories and powers of her past life. Only in the manga and Sailor Moon Crystal is it explained, for On the other hand, although the talismans of Sailor Neptune, Uranus and Pluto can help create the Lunar Cup (just as happens in the first anime); their original purpose is to summon this devastating warrior (Sailor Saturn): a special power that Sailor Neptune fears at first. Furthermore, although in the equivalent plot of the first anime (Sailor Moon S) Neptune does not find out until much later that she carries that talisman with her, in the manga and Crystal versions She is always aware of it, and even makes use of the mirror long before Sailor Moon finds out that this object is a talisman.
Meeting with the other Sailor Senshi
In the manga and Crystal versions, the first person in Usagi Tsukino's group to meet Michiru is Usagi's boyfriend, Mamoru Chiba. One day, Mamoru accidentally bumps into Michiru at the entrance to an arcade, causing her to drop a mirror he was carrying on the floor. This mirror is the Deepwater Mirror. As he very kindly picks it up to return it to her, Michiru notices that he has very noble eyes, and that this probably means that he was a prince in a previous existence. Puzzled, Mamoru asks her how she is able to know such things, and she tells him that his mirror is a magic mirror capable of revealing the identities of past lives. He then shows Mamoru his own reflection in the mirror, but what Mamoru sees reflected there is not himself, but Prince Endymion's face; that is, of the former prince that he himself would have been in his previous life. That's when Haruka, who has just met Usagi and his friends inside the video game room, comes out and meets up with Michiru to leave together.

Later, also in the manga, Michiru meets Mamoru again on the street and gives him some tickets to go see a concert where she will play the violin. Usagi sees them talking and becomes jealous of Michiru, while Mamoru becomes jealous of her after she sees Haruka flirting with Usagi. However, thanks to Chibiusa's help, Usagi and Mamoru finally find an opportunity to talk and explain to each other that there is no reason to distrust each other.
When Michiru adopts the identity of Sailor Neptune, she initially stays away from the rest of the Sailor Senshi (Sailor Moon and her friends; Sailor Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Venus); just like Sailor Uranus. Although both vigilantes constantly appear, suddenly, every time Sailor Moon and the others must confront the Witches 5, neither of them seems willing to reveal to them the details of their true mission, or the secret of his identity. Despite this, the suspicions of Sailor Moon and her group grow until, finally, they are able to confirm that Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune are, evidently, her, Haruka and Michiru's new acquaintances.
This pair of warriors, likewise, repeatedly demonstrates that they have different methods, strategies, and ways of thinking than those of Sailor Moon and her friends, the four Sailor Senshi of the Inner Solar System. This is the reason why, on numerous occasions, they express their desire to keep their distance.
In the end, when it is discovered that the reincarnation of the former Sailor Saturn is a young woman named Hotaru Tomoe, she ultimately becomes their ally and helps them defeat the aliens. Hotaru then dies and returns shortly after as a newborn baby whom Sailor Uranus, Neptune and Pluto take under her care. From then on, Hotaru becomes the adopted daughter of the three of them and she grows up again and assumes the identity of Sailor Saturn to fight alongside her every time they face a new enemy.
After the defeat of the Witches 5 and the Death Busters, Sailor Neptune and the other three Sailor Senshi of the External Solar System (Uranus, Pluto and Saturn) help Sailor Moon and her friends defeat two other antagonists, the Queen Neherenia and finally Sailor Galaxia. Sailor Galaxia and her followers manage to kill some of the Sailor Senshi of the Solar System, among which is Sailor Neptune. Despite that, once Sailor Moon manages to defeat Sailor Galaxia, Sailor Neptune and the rest of her are resurrected thanks to the power of her star seeds or sailor crystals.
Aspects and Forms
Because Michiru Kaiō is a character with different incarnations, special powers and transformations, and a longer than normal life span spanning from the era of the Silver Millennium to the 30th century, she takes on different aspects and identities as she that the series progresses.
Sailor Neptune
It is Michiru's identity as a Sailor Senshi warrior. Like the rest of the team's vigilantes, she wears a uniform similar to a sailor fuku and fights evil through a mystical faculty connected to a specific planet or star.

Sailor Neptune's uniform stands out for having a turquoise (or dark green) sailor collar, skirt and boots, in addition to her blue bows. Apart from forming a group with Sailor Uranus, Sailor Pluto and Sailor Saturn, Sailor Neptune is one of the eight warriors who follow Sailor Moon, the protagonist, and defines herself as the 'Warrior of Acceptance'; (sometimes also called "Warrior of Affinity"), who carries the protection of Neptune, which is called "the planet of the sea" or "planet of Deep Seas". In the Spanish version, the same presentation is sometimes translated as the "Warrior of the Waters, protected by the planet of the Deep Sea". Sailor Neptune is, along with Sailor Pluto, Uranus and Saturn, one of the four warriors of the External Solar System, who have protected the kingdom of the Silver Millennium from threats from outer space since ancient times.
As she gets stronger as the series progresses, Sailor Neptune gains additional powers. At certain key moments, her uniform changes to reflect this, taking on an appearance similar to Sailor Moon's uniform. The first time she and the others receive new powers, it takes on an appearance similar to Super Sailor Moon, and the second time, only in the manga, one similar to EternalSailor Moon.
In the Silver Millennium
Michiru is, like the rest of the protagonists, the reincarnation of one of the eight warriors who lived to protect this kingdom in their past life. In those times, each planet in the Solar System had a Sailor Senshi warrior who protected it, and all these warriors joined together to protect the entire Solar System. In turn, the warriors were subordinated to the authority of the royal dynasty of the Silver Millennium, that is, the royal family of the Moon, who were the most devoted and powerful guardians of the entire System.
According to the Sailor Moon S anime, in her previous life as Sailor Neptune, Michiru lived in the Silver Millennium with her companions, the other warriors. Once this kingdom was destroyed, all were reborn on the Earth of the 20th century along with Serenity, the princess of the Silver Millennium, and her court.

In the manga and in Sailor Moon Crystal, however, Sailor Neptune, like Sailor Uranus, Pluto and Saturn (the four guardians of the External Solar System) did not live in the Silver Millennium, but they protected it, as well as the rest of the planets in the System, from a distance. While Sailor Pluto was guarding the Gate of Time and Sailor Saturn was in perpetual sleep until her presence was required, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune were guarding the borders of the Solar System from their respective planets, Uranus and Neptune. They ensured that no invaders entered from outside to attack the rest of the planets, including Earth, or to attack the kingdom of the Silver Millennium that was on the Moon.
It is also said in the manga that Sailor Uranus and Neptune, like Sailor Pluto, were obliged to always remain vigilant on their planets or designated places. Although they were always far away, watching over those places, the Silver Millennium was the place they considered their true home and country. Since they could not abandon their posts, these three could never meet on the same planet, nor could they meet. Nor did he meet Princess Serenity (daughter of Queen Serenity) and the other four warriors, who lived in the lunar kingdom. But when the entity known as Metalia caused a great war between the Earth and the Moon, each of the talismans that they possessed began to resonate. It was at that moment that Sailor Pluto, Uranus and Neptune were able to meet on the same planet. Unknowingly, their three talismans summoned Sailor Saturn, who awakened and appeared for the first time before them to finish destroying what was left of life on the planets of the Solar System.
In the story of Sailor Moon
Once this occurred, the warriors of the External Solar System should not be reborn on the same planet so that their talismans could not resonate again and invoke Sailor Saturn again. However, the souls of Sailor Uranus, Neptune and Saturn, and later also Sailor Pluto, were sent to reincarnate in the future, on the Earth of the 20th century. Once reincarnated as a normal person with the name Michiru Kaiō, the reborn Sailor Neptune meets Haruka Ten'ō who is the reincarnation of Sailor Uranus, and together they recover the memory and powers of her previous life as Sailor Senshi. From then on they do everything possible to protect planet Earth from any threat. They even set out for some time to eliminate Hotaru Tomoe, the reincarnation of Sailor Saturn, before she too regains her old memories and powers to destroy the world once again. Despite this, in the end Saturn does not destroy the world. but becomes his ally. It is from then on that Pluto, Uranus, Neptune and Saturn, the four warriors of the External Solar System, meet to fight together and combat evil alongside the protagonist, Sailor Moon.
Princess Neptune
In the manga, like the other warriors, Sailor Neptune is represented as a princess of her home planet since the times of the ancient Silver Millennium. As a princess, she owns a royal palace on the planet Neptune, called Castle 'Triton', and she is called Princess Neptune or Princess Neptune. To officially identify herself as the princess of her planet, she wears a dark green dress - Michiru appears this way in Act 41 of the original manga and in additional materials.
