Metrovalencia is the commercial brand under which the public company Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV), dependent on the Generalitat Valenciana, operates the metro, suburban train and tram network in the city of Valencia (Spain) and its metropolitan area. The network consists of a total of 161,423 km, of which 29,525 km are underground. It has 146 stations and stops, of which 38 underground and 108 on the surface.

Currently, Metrovalencia has six metro lines and four tram lines, being the third network in number of kilometres, after Madrid and Barcelona, and the fourth in number of users, after Madrid, Barcelona and Bilbao.

History

The current network is the heir to the old narrow-gauge suburban railway network of Valencia, popularly known as the Trenet de Valencia, which linked the capital with some nearby towns. This network was built for the most part at the end of the XIX century and was successively managed by the Valencian Tramway Society, later by Compañía de Tramvías y Ferrocarriles de Valencia and finally by Ferrocarriles Españoles de Vía Estrecha.

The city of Valencia had six lines in two networks or zones (North and South), with two terminal and main stations:

A) North Network: Pont de Fusta station as head, from which the lines to Llíria, Bétera, Rafelbuñol and Grao departed.

B) South Network: Estación de Jesús as the head of the station, from which the lines to Villanueva de Castellón and Nazaret departed. This last line (Jesús - Nazaret), was destroyed as a result of the flood of 1957.

In 1941, the Valencia Tramway and Railway Company presented a construction project entitled “Metropolitan de Valencia”, which consisted of a tunnel that would connect the stations of Puente de Madera and Calle de Jesús. The route started from the Puente de Madera Station, crossed the riverbed, continued along Calle de Navellos to Plaza de la Virgen, where it would have its first station. It would continue through the Plaza de la Reina, the then called Plaza del Caudillo, where the second station would be installed, arriving at Xàtiva street (third station), following the beginning of Ramón y Cajal avenue (fourth station), advancing in the direction of the Transit road until you reach the Jesús Station.

On April 20, 1977, the Ministry of Public Works presented the "Comprehensive Study of Transport in the Valencia Area" which proposed three subway lines. The first followed a North-South direction and linked the Orriols neighborhood with the Jesús Station. The second entered via the Ademuz Track, continued along the Grandes Vías and linked up with the Rafebunyol line in the vicinity of Alboraya. The third followed the West-East direction along the Turia River bed and Avenida del Puerto to Malvarrosa.

In December 1980, the construction of the first two sections of the metro was awarded, the so-called "Soriano-Renfe" (today Safranar-Bailén) with a length of 3,281 meters and the so-called "Empalme-Turia" of 3,026 meters.

The division into two networks existed until October 8, 1988, when the first metro tunnel was inaugurated in Valencia, connecting the northern lines of the city with the southern one.

The old stations of Pont de Fusta and Jesús were no longer terminal stations for the Valencia train. Currently, Pont de Fusta is a passing stop for trams on line 4 and Jesús is an underground passing station for lines 1, 2 and 7.

With the inauguration of underground lines 1 and 2 in October 1988, Valencia became the third Spanish city to start up a metropolitan railway service.

On July 3, 2006, the fourth most serious metro accident in the world occurred, as well as one of the most serious railway accidents in the history of Spain. 43 people died and another 47 were injured.

Line 1: Bétera - Villanueva de Castellón

Metro unit at the Àngel Guimerà station. (Anden of lines 1 and 2)

Line 1 comes from the FEVE lines Jesús - Castelló and Pont de Fusta - Bétera. It has 40 stations, of which 8 are underground (those between the Beniferri and Safranar stations).

On September 13, 2021, the burial of a 288-meter section between the Empalme and Burjassot stations was put into service.

In addition to Bétera and Castelló, line 1 provides short services to other intermediate stations with greater passenger demand. These other terminal stations are: Seminari-CEU, Empalme, Torrent, Picassent and L'Alcúdia.

The busiest stations are Empalme, Àngel Guimerà, Plaça d'Espanya and Jesús. The latter is located about 150 meters from the Valencia-Joaquín Sorolla de Adif station.

Line 2: Llíria - Torrent Avinguda

Benimàmet Station (L2)

The origin of the line comes from the old trenet lines that connected the stations: Valencia - Pont de Fusta with Llíria (North Zone) and Valencia - Jesús until Torrent (South Zone).

Line 2 was inaugurated in October 1988, covering the route between Llíria and South Valencia. Later it was suppressed, leaving the section between Llíria and Empalme (then called Ademús) as a branch of line 1. In the remodeling of the entire network that was carried out in 2015, line 2 was recovered again with a layout similar to the original, since it currently runs between Llíria and Torrent Avinguda.

This line has 33 stations, 11 of which are underground (8 of them correspond to the section between Beniferri and Safranar, the ninth is the Torrent-Avinguda station and the last two are Les Carolines-Fira and Benimàmet).

In addition to Llíria and Torrent Avinguda, line 2 provides short services to other stations located in sections with greater passenger demand. These other stations with the end of the journey are Paterna and Valencia Sur.

The busiest stations are Empalme, Àngel Guimerà, Plaça d'Espanya and Jesús.

In April 2022, the works to widen the track in the Paterna-Polígono Fuente del Jarro section and the construction of a second station in said polygon were tendered.

Line 3: Rafelbunyol - Aeroport

Machado station. (L3 and L9)

Line 3 is based on the old Trenet line that connected the Valencia - Pont of Fusta station and the town of Rafelbuñol. This line, which is the most influx of passengers, runs on the surface from Rafelbunyol to the station of Almàssera and underground from Alboraya-Peris Aragó to the end of the line, In Aeroport and has 27 stations, being 8 on surface and 19 underground. Line 3 tunnels are different in different sections. From Alboraya-Peris Aragó to Alameda the tunnel is double track. From Alameda , line 3 shares infrastructure with 5 and 9, while the tunnels have a circular section and run in parallel (or superimposed at the station of xàtiva ) house a path in each direction. This configuration is maintained to the Avinguda station of the Cid, from which and up to Aeroport the tunnel is again two.

Within the actions provided for in the frequency improvement plan is the road unfolding project in the sections between Alboraia-Peris Aragó and Almàssera; Museros and Albalat dels Sorells; and Rafelbunyol and Massamagrell.

Line 4: Mas del Rosari/Fira València - Doctor Lluch and Lloma Llarga Terramelar - Empalme

L4 tram in the Empalme loop

This line arose from the conversion in a modern branch tram that had remained between the also season (today joint station) and the Pont de Musta station due to the creation of lines 1 and 2 of Metrovalencia and the old Trenet line of Valencia that connected this last station with the Grao neighborhood. It should be noted that Valencia was the first city of Spain that reintroduced this transport system. Its inauguration occurred on May 21, 1994.

The line has suffered various extensions in its west zone, in particular a branch was inaugurated in March 1999 to RTVV that covered the demand of the Burjasot campus of the University of Valencia. In September 1999, a branch was inaugurated that connected the RTVV station with the sampling fair, some time later the branch of the sampling Vicent Andrés Estellés to go tram to the sampling fair. On September 23, 2005, the section that joins the TVV station with the More of the Rosari was inaugurated in the neighborhood of the Coma in Paterna, about 3 kilometers Length, and on December 20, 2005, the branch that serves the neighborhoods of Valterna, Lloma Llarga and Terramelar was inaugurated, also in Paterna. It currently has 33 stops. The trams of this line (3800 series) are very similar to those used since 1995 in Lisbon.

Line 5: Maritim - Aeroport

Metro lines 5 and 7 at Aragon station.

Line 5 joins the port with the airport. The first section that opened was the one between the Alameda and Ayora station on April 30, 2003. On April 2, 2007, the Maritim Station, an intermodal station designed to join line 5 with the line with the Port tram. Finally, on April 18, 2007, the section between Mislata Almassil and Manises Airport was opened, which replaced the service that previously gave the C-4 near Valencia line.

This line has 18 stations, all of them underground. The stations with the highest influx of passengers are Aeroport , àngel Guimerà and maritim . The latter is 500 meters from the Valencia-Cabañal station of Adif.

It should be noted that all stops on this line are shared with some other, that is, it has no exclusive stops.

Line 6: Tossal of the Rei - Maritim

Tram of lines 6 and 8.

Line 6 connects the neighborhoods of Orriols and Torrefiel with the maritime district of Valencia. This line shares a route with line 4 between the stations of Trinitat and Platja Les Arenes (or Doctor Lluch, depending on the direction of travel). It currently has 21 stops.

Line 7: Maritim - Torrent Avinguda

Torrent Avinguda Station (L2 and L7)

Metrovalencia line 7 is an old branch of line 5 that linked Torrent station with Marítim. Later on, when the extension to Torrent Avinguda was inaugurated, this branch became part of line 5. It is the branch that goes from Torrent Avinguda to the Marítim station (passing through the Bailén intermodal station) which began to operate in March 2015. form part of the new line 7. Its history began on September 22, 2004, when the branch that makes an underground penetration in the town of Torrent was inaugurated, starting from the Torrent surface station to the new Torrent underground station. Avinguda, more central than the previous one. A year later, on October 3, 2005, the Bailén station was inaugurated on the branch that linked lines 1 and 5 between Colón and Jesús. On April 2, 2007, the Marítim Station came into service, an intermodal station designed to link lines 5 and 7 with the line 8 tram to the port and line 6. It has 16 stations, the only one that does not shares with other lines is the Bailén line, which is linked by a pedestrian passage with the Alicante line 10.

Line 8: Maritim - Neptú

Grau-Canyamelar Stop (L6 and L8)

This line, which is the shortest of all, corresponds entirely to the tramway section of the original line 5. This section has been in operation, although under other names, since the April 2, 2007 line came into service Marítim station, an intermodal station designed to link metro lines 5 and 7 with the tram to the port through lines 6 and 8. This line was inaugurated on April 16, 2007 between the Marítim and Neptú stations. It has 4 stops.

In February 2021, the Metrovalencia Network Frequency Improvement Plan was presented, which contemplates the suppression of line 8 on its current route, which would be absorbed by line 6.

Line 9: Alboraya Peris Aragó - Riba-roja de Túria

Alboraya Palmaret Station (lines 3 and 9)

Metrovalencia line 9 came into operation on March 6, 2015. This line begins in Alboraya Peris Aragó and has a common route with lines 3 and 5 from which it separates at Rosas station to continue to Riba- Túria red for the route of the already dismantled railway from Valencia to Llíria de Renfe, which before its closure was covered by the C-4 line of Renfe Cercanías.

On July 31, 2018, the Valencia la Vella stop was inaugurated, so this line currently has 23 stations.

Supports and titles

The supports are the cards in which the transport tickets are loaded, which allow travel. There are different supports and titles, each one subject to different conditions and rates.

Supports

There are two types of support, differentiated by the degree of customization, the material and the emitter. On the one hand there is the Sum Card , which is issued by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of Valencia and integrates the EMT Valencia, Metrovalencia, Cercanías Renfe and Metrobús. On the other hand, there is Tuin, which has its use restricted to the metrovalence network.

Titles

On the other hand, there are three types of tickets: those of the purse type, their own and those integrated by the Valencia Metropolitan Transport Authority.

SUMA Integrated Titles

The tickets integrated by the ATMV, valid since January 31, 2022, allow you to travel and change the bus network of the EMT Valencia, Metrovalencia, Cercanías Renfe and Metrobús.

There are two main modalities, the SUMA 10 and the SUMA Monthly. The first allows a load of 10 trips with a transfer included and the second allows unlimited trips by all operators for 30 days. The SUMA Monthly Jove is identical to the SUMA Monthly, with a discount for Carnet Jove holders.

Wallet

Also called TuiN, it is a ticket that requires recharging money (of at least €5) in a Metrovalencia support. The ATVM cards are not valid. When making each trip, the corresponding amount is automatically deducted. The ticket allows a maximum of sixty people to travel throughout the metro and tram network if they travel together. It is necessary to validate it both when entering and leaving metro stations and, in the case of tram stops, only when entering. If a personalized Metrovalencia support is used, a monthly consumption limit is automatically established after which trips are free. There are discounts of 20 and 50% for single-parent and large families; and there is also the TuiN Jove version, which applies a 15% discount.

Expansion projects in process

Simulation of the Metrovalencia plane with the expansion projects planned for 2030.

Currently, the expansion of Line 10 and the construction of Lines 11 and 12 are being planned. The duplication of the tunnel between Bailén and Alameda, the extension of the tunnel between Pl. Espanya and Bailén are also under study and Line 14.

Extension of Line 10

On February 20, 2021, the project to expand line 10 from Natzaret was announced, through the Astilleros bridge and the Port of Valencia, to the Neptú stop, connecting at the Marina de Valencia stop with L6 and L8.

Subsequently, the extension of the line to the Xátiva station and, later, to the Mercat station was planned. It was also studied to continue the works to Pont de Fusta. However, in March 2021, the manager of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valencia, stated that the construction of the central section from Alicante station to Pont de Fusta was practically ruled out.

Line 11: City of Arts and Sciences-Justice - Neptú

On May 3, 2022, it was announced that the route of L11 will run from the City of Arts and Sciences, over the L'Assut de l'Or bridge and Avenida de Menorca to provide service to Corte Inglés and the Aqua Shopping Center, continuing in the direction of going along Avenida del Puerto until it meets the L10 again at the current Marina de Valencia stop on L6 and L8, ending at Neptú. The return direction will be through Juan Verdeguer street.

Line 12: Alicante - La Fe Hospital

Metrovalencia Line 12 will link Line 10, which came into service on May 17, 2022, with Hospital La Fe. The new Line 12 will link Line 10, between the Amado Granell and Quatre Carreres stops, with the Hospital La Fe in Valencia. It will run along Hermanos Maristas avenue and cross Ausiàs March avenue, until it connects with Isla Cabrera street and continues along Vicent Marco Miranda street and reaches Fernando Abril Martorell avenue, where the La Fe hospital center is located. The route will consist of approximately 4.1 kilometers long, of which 2.2 will be shared with Line 10 starting from the Alicante street station.

Second tunnel between Bailén and Alameda

The Metropolitan Mobility Plan provides for the construction of a new tunnel linking the Bailén and Alameda stations, with a station in the vicinity of the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. This tunnel will allow to increase the frequencies by eliminating the current bottleneck in Colón In May 2022, the drafting of the informative study of the construction project for the duplication of the tunnel with two possible alternative routes was tendered.

Pl. España and Bailén stations junction

At the end of 2021, the extension of the tunnel for lines 1 and 2 from Plaça Espanya station to Bailén station was presented at the PMoMe, which will be the terminal of the lines and they will stop running through the tunnel towards Jesús in which the 2006 accident occurred.

Extension of Line 9 to the center of Ribarroja del Turia

Currently, studies are being carried out to bring Line 9 to the center of Ribarroja del Turia since the current station is far from the urban center. This extension was announced at the inauguration of the València La Vella halt in 2018 and at the end of 2020 the studies began to be developed. At the end of 2021 it was announced that the extension will run on the route of the old commuter line and it will be studied whether the station will be underground or on the surface.

Line 14: Maritime - Barrio del Cristo

Metrovalencia Line 14 was presented with the PMoMe (Valencia Metropolitan Mobility Plan) at the end of 2021. The construction of a new surface and underground section is planned between Av. del Cid and the Barrio del Cristo, passing through and serving towns such as Aldaya, Chirivella or Alacuás, among others. The forecast is that it will come into operation from 2030.

Discarded expansion projects

Project to expand the Metro network that was never implemented.

The Generalitat Valenciana prior to 2008 announced various expansion projects that have currently been discarded.

The old Line T-2

The T-2 line was initially designed to connect the Orriols and Torrefiel neighborhoods with Natzaret, through the center of Valencia, dividing its construction into three sections:

  • North: From Tossal del Rei to Pont de Fusta. It runs on surface as a tram integrated into the public road with a reserved platform. Lines 4 and 6.
  • Centre: From Pont de Fusta to Alicante. This section would circulate through the historic center of Valencia being completely made by tunnelling and 30 meters deep, being from the railway line to greater depth of Valencia. It would pass under buildings and also cross the old channel of the Turia River. This section should be the last to be done, despite which much of the works of Mercat Central Station were performed. However, this section currently seems to be discarded.
  • South: From Alicante to Nazareth. It is an underground section from Alicante station to Amado Granell station, from which it circulates on the surface, with platform reserved for tram, and includes a temporary garage in Nazareth. This section currently constitutes Line 10, which opened on 17 May 2022.

Plaça d'Espanya - La Fe line

In October 2006, a few months after the metro accident that cost 43 lives, it was announced that in 2009 the curve where the accident occurred would be removed, extending the original line 1 from Plaça d&#39 station Spain until the new Faith.

Orbital line

The regional government presented another network expansion project in 2007, which consisted of an orbital tram line. This line would surround Valencia by the North and South boulevards connecting with Chirivella, Mislata and Alboraya.

L'Horta Sud Line

In 2006, the l'Horta Sud light rail project was presented. This line would run on the surface throughout its entire journey, except for the stations of Nou Manises, Manises and Quart de Poblet. It should start from the Manises station, passing through the Barrio del Cristo, Aldaya, Alacuás, Torrente, Picaña and Paiporta. From this point, it would fork into two branches:

  • One would arrive at Benetúser, Barrio de Orba (Alfafar), Masanasa, Catarroja, Albal, Alcácer and Silla.
  • The other branch would serve the neighborhood of La Torre, Sedaví, the Horno de Alcedo and the Nueva Fe (now in the city of Valencia), where it would connect with the orbital tram.

Coast Line

In 2005 the Coastal Tram was announced, which would run the route between Port Saplaya and Marítim Serrería, also passing through the Marina de Valencia station. Therefore, the tram route that currently belongs to line 8 would be extended to the north of the city, and later on, it would extend through the southern districts of the city, serving Pinedo, El Saler and La Albufera, to pass through El Palmar and end at El Perellonet.
