It was released on September 3, 1998 in Japan, October 21, 1998 in North America, and June 24, 1999 in Europe. It was developed and thought only for the Playstation console, according to the interview that Kojima gave to Famitsu Magazine in the celebration of the 20 years of Playstation. Also in the book included in the premium package it is stated that the idea for the game began in 1993 when the launch of the PlayStation was announced. Metal Gear Solid is the third release of the franchise Metal Gear and became the first in the series to make use of 3D graphics, one of the reasons why the term "Solid" was added to the title. predecessor is Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake from 1990, and its sequel, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, was released in 2001. This new installment offered cinematic scenes using the game engine, as well as voice acting in numerous codec sequences.

Metal Gear Solid follows Solid Snake, a soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility to neutralize the terrorist threat from the FOXHOUND, a genetically enhanced special forces unit. Snake must free two important hostages, confront the terrorists and prevent the launch of a nuclear attack. To do this, it has a remote support team that communicates information about the mission via codec, commanded by Colonel Roy Campbell, and complemented by by medical personnel, data analysis, weapons and survival experts.

The third installment of the saga was a commercial success, selling more than six million copies worldwide. Upon its release in Japan, it was ranked among the 15 best-selling titles of that year in the industry. video games, as well as appearing within the top ten best-selling titles on the PlayStation. It is described by many critics as one of the greatest and most important games of all time, earning a 94/100 rating on the website Metacritic, and recognized as the game that made stealth a popular genre. The game's commercial success prompted the release of an expanded version for PlayStation and PC titled Metal Gear Solid: Integral, and a remake, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, was later released for the Nintendo GameCube. The game has also spawned numerous sequels, prequels, and spin-offs, including dramas radio, comics and novels. In production there was a live action film produced by Avi Arad and Columbia Pictures, however said feature film never announced a trailer, and it was never released.

Plot

The story takes place between February 21 and 27, 2005, six years after the events of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, and 10 years after the events of the original Metal Gear.

FOXHOUND, a genetically enhanced special forces unit, staged an armed uprising on a remote island located in Alaska's Fox Archipelago. This island, codenamed Shadow Moses, is the site of a storage facility for nuclear weapons. The terrorist unit, led by a mercenary known as Liquid Snake, seized control of a nuclear-capable bipedal tank called Metal Gear REX, and threatens the United States Government with nuclear retaliation, if they do not receive in less than 24 hours the remains of the legendary soldier Big Boss.

Solid Snake is forced out of retirement under the orders of Colonel Roy Campbell. While Dr. Naomi Hunter injects Snake with nanomachines that will protect him from the freezing cold, Campbell assigns him his mission: he must penetrate the terrorists' defenses, neutralize their threat, and locate and rescue two hostages: Donald Anderson, the head of DARPA, and ArmsTech president Kenneth Baker. Campbell's niece, Meryl Silverburgh, is also being held at the facility after refusing to participate in his unit's uprising. Snake is convinced to participate in the mission due to the fact that the leader of the terrorists, Liquid Snake, physically resembled him and also because of the fact that they share his code name. which gets your attention.

Synopsis

Alaska, where the island of Shadow Moses is located, in the Fox Archipelago. Its low temperatures force Snake to inject an antifreeze peptide that will protect him from the polar cold.

Snake arrives on the island after being propelled by a single-seater VOA (Vehicle of Aquatic Operation) torpedo from a submarine, to avoid an aerial inclusion that could be registered by terrorist radars and also avoid being detected by the sonar of the facilities. Once at the base, Snake contacts Campbell via codec, who introduces him to Mei Ling, a visual analyst and data processor who will support him on the mission, as well as Nastasha Romanenko, a specialist in large-caliber and nuclear weapons. Former military instructor and expert on local flora and fauna, Master Miller, contacts Snake to offer remote assistance via codec.

After passing through the compound entrance guarded by terrorist soldiers, Snake locates Anderson in a cell. The latter informs Snake about a new prototype nuclear weapon called Metal Gear REX that is under the control of mercenaries. Anderson explains that initiating the detonation requires two different passwords, which both he and Baker know. But thanks to Psycho Mantis's mind power, they discovered his password and soon discover Baker's. However, to avoid the nuclear launch, there is a PAL ("Permissive Action License") card with a secret override code that aborts the detonation. After the talk, Anderson suddenly dies of a heart attack. Meryl, who is being held in an adjoining cell, he manages to escape and help Snake stop some enemy soldiers who alerted him to his presence, before escaping and leaving him behind. After the repelled attack, Snake locates Kenneth Baker, who is bound to some C-4 explosive charges. While attempting to free him, Revolver Ocelot, one of the terrorist leaders of the revolt, appears and challenges Snake to a gunfight. The battle is interrupted by a mysterious cyborg ninja who severes Ocelot's right hand with a sword and then escapes. After the altercation, Baker confesses to having given his password to the terrorists after being tortured. He advises Snake to contact Meryl, to whom he gave the PAL card that could be used to prevent the launch, but, like the DARPA chief, dies suddenly of heart attack.

Snake contacts Meryl via codec, and they agree to meet at the Research Lab once he has met with the scientist who created the Metal Gear, Dr. Hal "Otacon" Emmerich, to then use the codec. nullification and prevent the nuclear launch. When Snake goes to the Laboratory, he receives an anonymous call from a mysterious voice calling himself "Deepthroat" ("Deep Throat"), who warns him of an ambush that the enemy has prepared for him. Snake is attacked by the mercenary Vulcan Raven aboard an M1 Tank, but manages to disable the vehicle and defeat a Raven who vows to face him again. Snake locates Otacon in his lab, but the mysterious cyborg The ninja makes an appearance again, with the intention of engaging Snake in combat. After a harsh confrontation, where the ninja finally escapes, Snake recognizes him as his former ally, the deceased Gray Fox. After the altercation, Otacon leaves. comp He promises to help Snake from a distance, using special (optical) camouflage to gain information and supplies, while he remains invisible.

Snake meets with Meryl, who gives him the PAL card she obtained from Baker, and he agrees to let her accompany him on his mission. As they head to the Underground Base, Meryl is possessed by the mind-controlled Psycho Mantis., a member of FOXHOUND with psychic powers, and threatens to shoot Snake with his gun. Snake disarms Meryl and defeats Psycho Mantis, who, before dying, tells him that he had read the woman's mind, and discovered that Snake held an important place in her heart. After reaching the Underpass, Sniper Wolf, the Renegades' expert sniper, surprises Meryl from a great distance, forcing Snake to track down a PSG-1 sniper rifle to kill her. able to deal with it. After defeating her and trying to continue on his way, Snake is captured.

While Snake is imprisoned, Liquid confirms the suspicion that he and Solid are twin brothers. Ocelot, an expert in torture, applies strong electric shocks to Snake, which the latter can/can't withstand. Snake is later taken away to his cell, where he discovers a decomposed corpse of Anderson, who should have been dead for at least a week. Snake manages to escape his cell and makes his way to the Communications Tower, where he is ambushed by Liquid, piloting an attack helicopter. Hind-D, but manages to shoot it down with Stinger missiles. After breaking through the Communications Tower, Snake arrives at Campo Nevado, where he once again confronts Sniper Wolf. This time, however, Snake defeats Wolf in front of a heartbroken Otacon, who was in love with her.

Snake continues on his way to the hangar where Metal Gear REX is located, but a Vulcan Raven armed with an M61 Vulcan manages to stop him. Prior to the confrontation, Raven, who possesses shamanic intuition, is able to divine Snake's past, hinting that he is from "another world". The two confront each other in a cold store, resulting in Raven's death. Before passing away, she confesses to Snake that the man she saw die before her eyes was not the DARPA Chief, but Decoy Octopus, a member of FOXHOUND who mastered camouflage. In her agony, Raven predicts a violent and dark future for Snake., while being eaten by crows.

Snake, already infiltrated in the hangar where the Metal Gear is located, hears that Liquid and Ocelot have already started the nuclear launch sequence. Otacon explains to Snake that the PAL card works in two ways, as a detonation trigger when the process has not yet been activated, and as a undoer of that process, as long as it has already been activated previously. Using the PAL card he obtained from Baker, Snake begins the deactivation process. However, after using the card, Snake triggers the launch sequence. Liquid then reveals his true plan: he impersonated Master Miller from the beginning of the operation to guide Snake through the detonation process, due to not they were able to guess Anderson's password to trigger the launch, as he died in the torture chamber at the hands of Ocelot. Liquid explains that he and Solid are the product of Les Enfants Terribles, a government-sponsored project to clone Big. Boss, The Perfect Soldier, which took place during the 1970s. Liquid rants against his brother as Solid received all the dominant genes, while he received all the recessive genes. Liquid also reveals that the government's real reason for sending Snake was to spread the FoxDie virus (implanted by an injection Dr. Naomi Hunter gave him prior to infiltration), a virus that would kill all members of FOXHOUND, which p it would allow the government to recover Metal Gear REX intact. It was FoxDie who killed Decoy Octopus (disguised as the DARPA Chief), and President Baker, with apparent heart attacks.

Liquid takes control of Metal Gear REX and begins attacking Snake. The latter cannot pierce the bipedal tank's armor, so he can only try to blind it by destroying its electronic sensor. To no effect, Gray Fox appears and destroys the sensor, but not before confessing that he was Deep Throat and sacrificing his life. With REX fully vulnerable, Snake finally destroys the tank, causing a huge explosion at the scene. When he awakens, Snake finds himself on top of the Metal Gear, along with Meryl, tied to a bomb, and Liquid, who challenges him to a melee. Snake manages to defeat Liquid, who falls to a great height from the rex head After the encounter, he manages/fails to save Meryl and must quickly escape the scene, as the government, to prevent all traces of the incident, plans a nuclear attack on the island to eliminate all evidence.

"In the '80s, there were more than 60000 nuclear heads in the world. The destructive force of all weapons together was 1 million times higher than the destructive force of the Hiroshima Bomb-A. In January 1993, the United States and Russia signed the START 2 agreement with which they committed to reducing the number of nuclear heads by nation from 3000 to 3500 by 31 December 2002. However, in 1998, there are still 25000 nuclear heads in the world. »

Together with Meryl/Otacon, they escape aboard a jeep through an underground tunnel. However, Liquid pursues them, attacking them with a submachine gun. At the end of the journey, the two vehicles collide. Liquid is left in shooting position against an immobilized Snake. However, Liquid ultimately dies from the FoxDie virus. Finally, Campbell contacts Snake to inform him about the location of a snowmobile with which he can leave the place, but not before explaining that the nuclear attack on the island, was cancelled.

In the post-credits scene, Ocelot has a telephone conversation with an unknown man, to whom he reports what happened, revealing that he was a double agent all along. He explains that Solid was the one who really had the recessive genes, while Liquid was the carrier of the dominant ones. Also, that he recovered the false data from Rex's nuclear warhead and that after all, no one knows who he really is, because the DARPA Chief knew this, but had been "accidentally" eliminated. The conversation ends with him calling his interlocutor as the being poised for world domination, Solidus, and referring to him as "Mr. President".

Game system

Representation of Radar Soliton in the “infilment mode”. Created by Mei Ling, the bright spot in between is the player, the red points are the enemies. Radar doesn't affect the weather, but if an enemy discovers Snake's presence, it crashes. It cannot be used in areas with strong resonance.

Despite the transition to 3D, Metal Gear Solid maintains the similarity of its 2D predecessor, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake for MSX2. The player must navigate the protagonist, Solid Snake, through areas of the game without being detected by enemies. Detection is activated when the player moves into the enemy's field of vision, setting off an alarm that signals to the rest of the armed enemies their location. This causes the initiation of "alert mode", where the player must hide and remain undetected until the enemies lose sight of their location. After this, "evade mode" begins, where enemies remain alert for the presence of an intruder. When the counter reaches zero, it returns to "infiltration mode", where enemies no longer suspect Snake's presence. Radar cannot be used in alert or evade mode.

To avoid detection, the player can perform techniques that make use of both Solid Snake's abilities and the environment, such as crawling under objects, using boxes as hiding places, crouching or hiding around walls, and make some noise to distract the enemies. These are carried out using the third-person camera, which often changes its angle to give the player the best possible view of the area, and an on-screen radar, which shows enemies and their field of view. Snake can also make use of many items and gadgets, such as infrared goggles, rations, or cigarettes. The emphasis on stealth promotes a less violent form of the game, as confronting large groups of enemies causes heavy damage to the player..

The progress of the game is marked by cutscenes and codec communication, as well as encounters with various bosses. In order to advance, players must discover each other's weaknesses and defeat them. Regarding the controls and the different strategies of the game, the different aids can be accessed through the codec, where Snake's support team, for example, reminds the player to save his progress often enough, or explains his combat movements. depending on the buttons you must press on the remote. The codec is used to provide the player with more information about the background of the game's story. At the end of the adventure, the player is provided with a statistical summary and a "code name" about his performance, which is listed from the name of various animals.

For the first time in the Metal Gear series, a training mode, called «VR Mode», is available, in which players can practice infiltration techniques, the use of weapons, and stealth. In addition, there are small missions that involve confrontations between the player and various enemies from the perspective of the third and first person.

Fourth wall

The DualShock allowed a gaming experience of great realism.

One of the characteristics of the Metal Gear saga is the interaction that is generated with the player, this is evidenced in the way in which the adventure breaks the fourth wall. This resource consists of crossing the barrier that exists between the protagonist and his story, with the player. The support team contacts Snake to give him instructions on his mission. The fourth wall is breached when these involve the use of every single button on the controller. Campbell explains to Snake that in order to communicate with him via codec, he must press the Select button, as well as that the way to rappel is to use the X button to move away from the wall, while pressing the Steer Button to descend.

For Snake to withstand Ocelot's torture, he must repeatedly press the circle button. After this, a sore Snake communicates via codec with Naomi, who offers to stimulate his muscle fibers with the nanomachines that she injected him with prior to the infiltration. The Dr. asks the player to place the controller on their arm, where activating the controller's vibration mode (DualShock), stimulates the character's and player's sore arm. In these situations, the characters do not leave the fictional universe of the game or its plot line, but they enter the player to be a participant in it assuming their presence.

The most recognized example of breaking the fourth wall in Metal Gear Solid is the battle against Psycho Mantis. His telepathic power and the ability to read minds are projected through the player, where prior to the duel he summarizes his experience so far in the adventure, cataloging his performance against traps and enemies, as well as whether he has saved frequently or not the game. Later, he asks the player to place the controller on some flat surface, with the intention of moving it only with his psychokinetic powers, a situation that occurs thanks to DualShock.

The battle with Psycho Mantis is interrupted by an image that appears to be the VIDEO mode of the televisions of the time.

After the demonstration, he decides to read the player's mind more intensely, revealing to him which video games he likes. This is because he uses the data saved on the memory card to identify what other games the player owns. In addition, it recognizes the genre of these, highlighting if you like arcade, adventure, action, sports games, among others. In the PlayStation version, some of the games you can read are Azure Dreams, Suikoden, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Vandal Hearts, Policenauts and Snatcher. In Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes for GameCube he mentions Super Smash Bros. Melee, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Super Mario Sunshine and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. If there is no data from another video game on the memory card, Mantis will mention that our mind is in clean.

At the beginning of the battle, its image disappears for a few seconds, being replaced by one that appears to be the VIDEO mode of some televisions of the time, changing this word to HIDEO (Kojima's given name), revealing that Mantis' mental power is capable of controlling even the player's television. When attempting to use first-person view, it is no longer possible to look through Snake's eyes, but instead see through the eyes of Mantis, since it is the latter that is in our head and we see through its eyes. The way to defeat it is not unique, however, one of the ways to do it and that goes beyond the fourth wall, is the one that Campbell advises the player: since Mantis is using her psychic power to read the controller's movement, thus avoiding any type of attack, the controller from Port 1 should be changed and placed on Port 2, which prevents it from anticipating movements of the protagonist.

The character, the quality of the battle and how it breaks the fourth wall, has been praised by various media, as Psycho Mantis has addressed us over the protagonist of the game, thus acknowledging that with who has to talk is with the player, showing that he is in a world different from ours, but that he can affect him.

According to the timeline shown in the book of the premium package of the Metal Gear Solid game released in Japan in 1998, it is established that in 1993 Kojima began to idealize the third part of Metal Gear following the announcement of a console with great power in 3D, that is, the Sony PlayStation. In 1994 Hideo Kojima works and launches Policenauts for PC-9821, and later for 3DO in 1995.

Kojima retitled the game to Metal Gear Solid, over the first choice. This was due to the fact that he believed that the first two MSX2 installments were not well known. The use of the word "Solid" was due to the fact that this third installment uses 3D computer graphics, making the characters many. more "solid", as well as being in reference to Solid Snake, the protagonist of the installment. The sequels to this game also use the title Metal Gear Solid, following a numerical progression.

Development of Metal Gear Solid began in mid-1995, with the intent of creating "the best game on PlayStation". The developers aimed for precision and realism, while they made the game nice and tense. In the early stages of development, the Huntington Beach SWAT team would familiarize creators with a demonstration of various vehicles, weapons, and explosives. Weapons expert Motosada Mori was also tapped as a technical advisor in the investigation, which included visits to the Fort Irwin Military Reservation and shooting sessions at Stembridge Gun Rentals. Kojima stated that "If the player is not misled into believing that the world is real, then there is no point in making the game." To comply with this, adjustments were made to the smallest details, even the modeling of small individual desks.

Hideo Kojima created the characters for Metal Gear Solid. Modifications and mechanics were done by concept artist Yoji Shinkawa. The process was completed by polygon artists using brush drawings and clay models by Shinkawa himself. Kojima wanted more interaction with objects and the environment, allowing the player to hide the bodies in a storage compartment. In addition, he wanted "an orchestra next to the player's side." His idea: a system that would create modifications to the tempo and texture of the track being played, rather than drastically changing the next. Although these features were not achievable at the time, they were implemented in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

Metal Gear Solid was shown to the public at the Electronic Entertainment Expo gaming event in 1997, as a short video. It was later first playable at the Tokyo Game Show in 1998, and officially released the same year in Japan, with an extensive promotional campaign. Television and magazine advertisements, store displays, and demo giveaways meant a total of US$8 million in promotional expenses. An estimated 12 million demos of the game were distributed in 1998.

Cast and dubbing

For the original Japanese version, more than 15 voice actors were chosen to play the characters in the game. Yumi Takada was in charge of the casting, while Nicole Punicki and Derek Vanderhorst were in charge of recording and dialogue supervision, respectively. The English version of Metal Gear Solid was translated by Jeremy Blaustein, who later worked on titles such as Snatcher, Silent Hill 2 and the Shadow Hearts saga, In addition to these versions, Spanish dubbing, German, French and Italian were released in Europe.

The Spanish version was dubbed in 10 days, in sessions of two to three hours a day. The recording was made without visual references and with several actors at the same time, a very different process than usual, where each actor records their dialogue separately, to later unite and assemble the final work. The direction of the dubbing into Spanish was in charge of Guillermo Reinlein, under the supervision of Japanese personnel. Below is a table with voice actors who participated in Metal Gear Solid:

The "VR Disc" features over 300 test missions, from stealth to shooter skills, as well as less conventional tests, such as solving murder mysteries, fighting giant genome soldiers, and three missions where the player Control the cyborg ninja. Other special features include trailers for Metal Gear Solid, an art preview of Metal Gear RAY from Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and a "camera" mode, where Snake can take pictures of Mei Ling and Naomi. The "VR Disc" of the Integral version was released as a standalone product outside of Japan, in North America as Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions on September 23 1999, and in Europe as Metal Gear Solid: Special Missions on October 29, 1999. Upon loading the special missions, the player is prompted to replace the game disc with any of the Metal Gear Solid discs. This requirement was absent from the American and Japanese versions of VR Missions.

A PC version of Integral was also released in Europe and North America in late 2000, downloaded for the PocketStation. With a rating of 83/100 from Metacritic, the game was criticized for "graphical issues" and because it is essentially an identical version to the PlayStation.

Another change was in the English voice acting, due to the reduction of the accents of Mei Ling, Naomi and Nastasha, as well as the redefinition of the voice actor of the cyborg ninja, from Greg Eagles in the original version (who also does the voice acting). voice of Chief DARPA), to Rob Paulsen. The graphics have also been updated to match those of MGS2.
